Well what are some good tips for speeding up your computer for games other than the obvious ones like to not have other programs running, disabling antivirus and having updated drivers.

Think that resolution would be good for Half-Life²?

Obviously better hardware would do it, I'm not that stupid, I'm talking about software and such that might help me out.

Just delete your registry.

Try this at your own risk.

overclocking isn't as easy as it sounds, and it won't do that much of a difference if you're not running the right hardware.

defrag your harddrive, get latest drivers for all your hardware, adjust game video settings for more performace/less detail or less performance/more detail unless you have loadsa £££ then get top of range hardware and adjust settings for more performance/more detail.

Scan Your PC for Spyware Programs/Files using PestPatrol www.pestpatrol.com or Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoft.com/

I like pestpatrol

Make sure that autoupdating is turned off, If your playing a game and lets just say 1 hour into playing, software such as windows or anti-virus will start autoupdating itself causing lag.

I don't recommend overclocking, I found quirks after 6 months, like locking up on a loading screen, or windows wouldn't boot.

Also motherboard Chipset Drivers do a good boost, depending what chipset you have, get the appropiate update for it

To name a few chipsets there is

Intel
SiS
Via
NForce
AMD
