I think drumrolls sound okay in really cheesy trance songs, but other than that i think people should find more creative ways to get to that point.

So are drumsrolls difficult to make in reason or is it just cheesey as hell to use them????

Usually drumrolls really are ciche but in some porticular situations they are awesom, as a matter of fact Maor (Perry) here from TA sometimes uses drumrolls and they sound very good.

It's just a way of useing them.

there are so many other ways to build tension in a build up.

using snares is just one.

i find that this is the most important part of a prog. track, and if it sounds even a little cheesy, i start over and use some other sound.

C'mon, someone must have some tips... I'd be interested in hearing any too. Plenty of good tracks use drumrolls and they're not always cheesy. Infact, the kick drumroll accompanied by that big 'down' sound seems to be quite in fashion at the moment...

To be original and make them sound interesting, use a combination of fx like reverbs,flangers, and delay. Plus, do lots of automations. You will be amazed what you will come up with. I think drum rolls are essentials in some instances but they have to be used wisely.

Also wanted to add that you should not stick to some common pattern. Try to change the notes as the drum roll speeds up. In addition, you should usually layer the drum roll with some other progressin sounds, for example wooshe or a break beat kick. Layering things together will make the transitions sound more complex and entertaining. And most of all, experiment.
