Ooh, I know merengue. It's a spanish form of music, danced with a partner. I don't know if it originated in the Dominican Republic, but it is listened to mostly by Dominicans along with every other hispanic denomination.

ska was popular for a little while in the mid 90's and consists of stuff that like is similar to swing music from the 40's...my sister used to listen to it...stuff like "cherry poppin' daddys"

Ska was originally created in the late 50's in Jamaica. you'll notice the charactheristic bass, saxophones and stuff. it later spread to reggae in the 60's and eventually got another rise around the eighties, when alot of punk and pop bands adopted it. this is however another kind of ska than the original.

personally i have only heard stuff from the third wave, since i listen to punkrock. many of these bands played ska in the beginning of their careers. an easily accessible example would be millencolins early stuff.

haha another i wasn't aware of as a musical genre. However, a revival is a term given to a remake of a once great play on Broadway. Any awards show such as the Tony Awards consider revivals separately from the original productions. So i would assume that revival music is a term given to modern people remaking music that was made a long time ago? howd i do?

Finaly one i know! the use of a lot of brass instrument sounds in punkish style music (usually trombone trumpet and sax), usually has a kickin slap bass line too. It developed when some kids who were into swing music thought they could put a new age spin on it. Mighty mighty boss tones, no doubt, goldfinger, etc are very very newage/pop examples of ska.

merengue-
another one i know! It's technically dominikan folk music...i think. The music is based on what are called tambura drums, and the skilled musicians who play them pound out funky african beats. You usually dance with a partner too. Hispanics say they invented the music and africans say they did only under a different name "Bara". Salsa music mostly evolved from this as well.

i believe this is romantic and usually french opera music, if not opera then atleast very classical

crossover-
i only know of classical crossover and if that's what you mean, then that is a classical piano that is heavily influenced by jazz. I remember reading somewhere that it also has roots in baroque composition. if you are into this style check out P.I. White, my dad has listened to him for a while so i grew up knowing his name.

i'm interested to hear about the ones i don't know, and please correct me on the ones i'm wrong about

As long as their is a "mystique" surrounding the art world, this word will never go away.

"Avantgarde" means Advanced Guard (or something close) and represents musicians who are making the music of tomorrow. Kraftwerk is a great example of musicians who were avantgarde, though their music may not have been considered to be so. This term is not limited to music but is generally applicable in all forms of art.

Satire, on the other hand sounds like songs that make fun of popular genres, artists or other songs. These may come in any form. A great example of this is the SI Remix (aka Kazoo Remix) of Kernkraft 400. Contact me if youd like a sample...

Ska was always a niche market that somehow went legit in the late 90's. Sometimes people confuse ska with punk, which according to my brother is two different genres of music. THo I liked punk more than ska, if I had to choose.
