if you're buying off a person, get them to ship it as a gift and skip all the customs charges

That designation is not possible anymore.

Taxes are applicable (both provincial and federal sales tax), plus tariffs, depending on the nature of the goods. The pertinent information can be found on the Canada Border Services Agency website at the following link:

Yeah. Have them declare a very low value, if possible.

You'll screw the pooch for insurance coverage that way, not to mention the legal implications of such fraudulent activities.

Bottom line is that most commercial freight companies (UPS, Fedex, and others) require a commercial invoice and any applicable customs forms be completed and included with the waybill before shipping. This speeds up the process with the customs brokerage involved in the shipping process... the invoice declares the value of the goods being shipped and also must match the insured value of the shipment.

It's never wise to ship items of such value without insurance.

I purchased a brand new Cisco Catalyst 2950T-24 switch for my house (yes I'm a geek, but being able to do things like layer-3 filtering and QoS on your switch is friggin HOT!).

Anyway, I had the vendor ship it to me as a replacement part. Didn't cost me a cent extra, and had full insurance.
