It's because he recently started communicating with various news agencies and the such, thanking them for the coverage of him. With modern day forensics, they were able to trail where the mail was being sent from and basically found the killer, himself.

Sick and stupid. What a combination.
Actually it kind of makes me wonder what other famous serial killers that were never caught are actually living an "average" life amoung the people who tried to find them.
Could be in my neighborhood.

From my law classes learned a fun stat. 80% of all serial killers are uncaught and will never BE caught. The FBI has a profile on every single one of them...and they can say that in 2 weeks a Brown haired white girl with blue eyes weighing between 110-120 lbs will be killed a white male, 5'10 with blonde hair and a degree. He was probably raised in this environment...bla bla bla. and they have paper trails of those "missing person" posters that show distinct paths and travel patters of killers.
just in a city...no...fucking...way...to catch them.
random killers can do whatever they want.
fun stuff @@ I dont let my female friends walk alone after 6pm. Its a pain in the ass but at UW we had a good ol boy serial killer. would have crutches and books and have girls help him get to his van. Then beat the shit out of them, throw them in and they were never seen again.
