Track Suggestions

Hi, I need some suggestions on what track to mix after Conjure One feat Sinead O'Connor - Tears From The Moon (Tiesto's ISOS Remix). I'm making a promo mix CD.

check the sticky on the top of this page that talks about harmonics. that track's key may be in there and you can find other tracks that will go well.

although i dont know why you would include a 4 year old track on a promo mix.

What's the big deal?

Doesn't promo come from "promote" and/or "promotional". If he's trying to "promote" his mix, why can't he put a song on there that's 4 years old? I've heard "Promo mixes" from a lot of DJ's and not every single track was hot off the press or unreleased.

Thanks mate, I don't know what is the matter with TAs these days, they dismiss excellent mixes as bad just because they contain a few old tracks. It's not like I have to explain my reasons for including that song, but I'm gonna anyway.

I don't know if you noticed, but I live in Guatemala, in which the EDM scene is still (gratefully) underground and taking baby steps, so it doesn't matter if I include Energy 52 - Cafe del Mar in a mix because surely to 99.9% of the audience it will sound like a "hot new track"!

oh man! some of the oldies dont have the production values of newer tracks - but by god they had it! whatever it was! i still dont know what it is! they just have something. listening to some old skoolers right now. one of em (sort of old skool) charley t - elevate your mind aint gonna win any awards for production. but the riff is simple. melancholic and darkly euphoric. i love it. same as how peeps in hard house circles still rinse base graffiti - house always wins. its getting on a bit and showing its age in production terms but that tune destroys slinky every time ive seen it played there. as in - comparable to the aftermath of a battlefield.

+ there are some really really old skool hardcore tracks which i still think are riff monsters...WHOOAAAAAARRRGH!!!!!

castle trancelot - indoctrinate is on next. oh baby...

trust me, i am not saying i dont understand the production values of older tracks. i love that tune. love the vocal. i was just asking why you were putting it on a demo/promo mix. and you answered that.

as much of "whats wrong with ta's" nowadays, i will also say that some people are a bit sensitive. i pointed you in the direction of the harmonics thread (your welcome) and merely asked why you were putting a 4 year old song on a promo mix.

i did not say...

why the fuck would you put some old ass track on a promo mix. what are you promoing, outdated shit? fuckin newb.

Ok, I apologize, but this is not the first time I've asked something like this and in numerous occasions I've been flamed, that's why I reacted like that. And yeah, I never did thanked you for pointing me towards the harmonics thread.

The problem is that you have to match the key AND the tempo (to a degree). I think the Tiesto remix is about 137 BPM so you want to find another track that is in same key and a similar BPM (say +/- 3).
You don't have to mix into the exact same key, you can either go into the perfect fourth (Dm in this case) or the perfect fifth (Em). These will still sound good even though they are different notes. Of course these are really rules of thumb, because two tracks are in the same key does not mean they will mix perfectly (but it does help narrow the field). You can also try mixing into the relative major (C major) but it is tough to find trance tracks in major keys (Airbase tends to do it though).

So in review, from the above list Aalto - Rush would be a better choice than Duncan Sheik - On A High because Rush's BPM is 138 while On A High is running down at 130.

EDIT - A little more info about how much you can shift the BPM if you didn't read the sticky thread.

A shift in key (one semi-tone) is 6%, a shift of 3% is half way between to keys (in "off key limbo land") which we want to avoid. So lets say you want to stay within 2% so it sounds real close. When playing most trance (in the 140 BPM range) this is about 2.8 BPM and when in playing slower prog our house at aobut 125 it is 2.5 BPM.
