well, indirectly they do if they are described as VST instruments, or VSTi.
vst instruments work with cubase, fruity, tracktion, sonar (indirectly), and they do NOT work with reason.

I mean if it had an exe and an interface then it would be so much simpler hehe.

well, then it is a standalone version.

Just that i wanna make sure my understanding is correct..
Ive got a ruddy keyboard here with MIDI IN/OUTs and a USB to MIDI cable.. so once I hook the keyboard to the soundcard, I run it thru the softsynth and use the softsynth to manipulate the sound. Correct?

ew ... not really. first, i do not think that usb to midi adaptor exists. so, you connect midi out of your keyboard to midi in on your computer, run a softsynth or a host with that synth, and play it with your keyboard.

Do I need to configure anything in the 'host' program? |
yes. you need to define midi inputs, audio outputs, and latency settings.
i suggest you download vst host (search for 'hosts' on kvraudio.com forum), it is free and very easy to use if all you want is to play soft synths with your keyboard. for something bigger, you might need to cash out.
