Device to keep ur tunes in the same key?

Hey all,

Anyone know of a device or effects unit that will keep ur tunes in their original keys regardless of how much you pitch ur records up or down while mixing. Something akin to a cdj's master pitch... I have never seen anything like this for sale.

Well some of todays decks have them, its called key lock, but due to the nature of vinyl and the way key lock works, it sounds like ass once you pass a 1% difference.

I think its cheating to speed up or slow down a record at all, pitch control is cheating in general.

hes being sarcastic.

theres nothing wrong with holding pitch whilst changing tempo. its just another DJing tool. not aware of any device that is capable of doing it. except the gemini pdt-1000 which has this feature. but having never used one i dont know how effective it is. on cdjs the ability to hold pitch and change tempo is brilliant. l lub cdjs.

I have two pieces of equipment that have key lock.......my stanton str8-100 turntables, and a numark axis 9 cd player.

I never use either though.....the key lock on the axis 9's just sounds like shit if you go past maybe 1 or 2% pitch change (which is the only time you need it anyway). The stantons aren't nearly as bad...it CAN sound good, depending. But a lot of the time it sounds as if there's some weird echo thing going on.

in general, key locks on decks arent very effective with edm.. but if you play some hip hop or other forms without the constant (and repetative) kick drum, it can sound quite good even when pitching to +5%. (i was listening to some juno reactor & aphex twin the other day on a str8-80, and it sounded great until about +6%)

ive never seen stand alone equipment that can do this perfectly with an audio source though.. unless it can record analog, convert to digital and reproduce the sound without lag or sound quality loss. would be nice though

razzi.

there is something called Vinyl Touch Classic, which is basically just a DSP board which you plug both your turntables into and it does a master Tempo job. I couldnt find much on it on google and the company that makes them have a really crap site www.mixmachines.com but i think thats the jobby your looking for.

The Pioneer CDJ 1000 MkII does a pretty good job of this even at higher speeds. Ofcourse you are limited to what you can play on it but it works pretty well.

Cheers

Actually I have noticed that...not sure what it is about it. That's why I said sometimes it works.

For example, I remember closer to when I first got my str8-100s, about three years ago, I experimented with it a lot more. I remember vividly layering 50 cent- in da club (remember....three years ago, this was before the song was popular and before I would strangle anyone that played it) over a house set......and it sounded really good. That record was pitched up to like +24%....and it just sounded sped up, nothing wrong with it. Also, a lot of times when i'm spinning hip-hop, i'll use it when i start getting kind of crazy and the speed gets up there....and a lot of times it'll sound good. With edm though, for some reason, it sounds like a constant trainwreck to me.
