What would you do in my situation?

Yes this is a turntable question.

Right now my Stanton str8-30 turntable had a pitch slider problem. I would move the slider the slightest bit to make it go faster and it sped up way too much. Upon trying to fix it myself, it wont work at all now, (wont spin) Now that I'm not that much of a beginner anymore I was thinking of upgrading TTs anyways. However I have $0 right now, and the place where I'm applying for a job hires AFTER Easter.

So I don't know if I should

Send this TT to get fixed when I get the money (Not that much $)

Save up and get the technics (which will take fucking long since Ill be working only 10 hrs a week)

Save up and get the stanton str8-100 which will not take that long, and I hear these turntables are pretty decent, 2.2 kg torque (more than techs)

Get the stanton str8-150 which have 4.5 kg torque! (Meaning the are better than techs, right? which cost almost as much as techs)

Which should I do?

Sorry for the long post, I just can't make up my mind.

if you really want the straight tone arms then get the str8-150s if not get the st150s.

Actually it's not really about the tonearms at all.

Just which I should decide on and stick to.

Fix my shitty str8-30s (Relatively cheap)

get the st(r8)-100s (2 months of working will most about pay that)

the st(r8)-150s (Quite a while before I save up for two of these)

Or should I just save up for technics (This would also take me quite a while to save up for)

And I freaking impatient and want to continue mixing. See, right now I only have one working TT.

if you can, Techs. i wouldn't really bother with the 150s, but that's just my personal preference.

maybe you could check out some used equip on eBay or something.

Alright, but is torque all that counts in TTs? I think the st-100 has about 2.2 kg torque, which is more than the techs, so what other factors should I look at? I heard of WOW and flutter, but I don't think I know what those mean.

If I understand them correctly, WOW and Flutter is how much the deck will deviate in pitch when the pitch slider is not moving. IE your're in the middle of a mix, if your deck has a high WOW and flutter, you may have the tunes beatmatched absolutly flawlessly, but the tunes may still drift because the decks will fluctuate in their pitch in small amounts. Techs have almost 0 wow and flutter and the stantons have something like .25%. It's something you want as low as possible, but you can live with it being .25%. And you really don't need anything above about 2kg of torque unless you're doing some hardcore scratching.

In your situation, I would get the deck fixed and then start saving up. It seems like you love to mix, so get the deck fixed so you can start mixing again as soon as possible. Once your mixing again, you'll either blow all your savings on records, like me, or you can save up for techs or TTX's or whatever your heart desires.

Thanks bro. I think that's what I'll do, it does seem logical. I can't wait MONTHS to start mixing again, so I'll fix these, and save up for either tech's or st-100's. (Now I just have to choose which)

You should be able to get a set of Technics in good working condition that will last for another 10 years for around $500 if you look around.

Get the str8-100s...I like them better than techs.

The exact wow/flutter numbers are .025% for techs and "less than .2%" for the str8-100s. However...I don't believe the numbers. I have never had a problem with my decks wavering in pitch, yet i have noticed very slight problems on the technics.

But that's just my 2 cents.

I think you are right on that. I actually have 2 techs and a stanton str8-80 as a 3rd deck that i borrowed.. the torq on it isnt to bad, records push off ok .. but it dosnt hold the pitch as well as the technics.

Everyone has a right to their 2 cents. I am not going to go into one of these Techs vs ??? debates. Every (educated) person knows why techs have been industry standard for years.

Thats all i have to say about that (my 2 cents of course)
