Wrong mp3 timelength annoying

One of my mp3 files states the length is 8:39 but actually only plays up to 7:59 (which is the correct length). This doesn't affect performance or quality but WHY does this occur? (corrupt file?)

EDIT:
I just used Creative Audio Converter and re-encoded the file from 160kbps to 160kbps. It fixed the problem by chopping out the other 40 seconds that doesn't load and shrunk the filesize too from 9958 --> 9386.

Does anyone still know the reason for this?

he meant is the mp3 in variable bit rate as opposed to constant. if u use winamp, watch the bitrate and it'll jump around if it's variable

sometimes i'll have that time problem and it's usually a vbr mp3. to fix it i just open it in goldwave and save it as a constant bitrate
