'Trance' refers to a synth-based sound that is very repetitive. Although it is typically relaxing in nature, there are different flavors of trance, ranging from the lethargic to 'Hard Trance', a more powerful version of the typical repetitive trance style. While techno tries to change the rules, trance stays within the lines, and builds slowly upon a simple starting rhythm. 'Techno' has become a very vague description of electronic music. Techno consists of repetitions, minor melodies, and mechanical noises. Unlike Trance, a Techno song may vary throughout with time changes, complete reversals, and other experiments in musical theory. This electronic style has spawned many new forms by mixing in other various digital styles with itself.

Pretty good description.

the first thing that I can tell with if im listning to a techno track vs a trance track right away is the bassline, kick & high hatts.

yes there are many other differences, but that is the easiest way for me to distinguish them.

Just listen and feel the difference. Its hard to put a definition to it, cause of all the cross breeding of tunes. Like cirez d stuff, murder was the bass, "hard house" stuff, tech trance, tech house, hardstyle...

they all have a lot of the same sounds & instruments, but I can tell the differences in structure mainly caused by repition as previousely mentioned.

To me they aren't even similar. Techno = take a 1 sek sample and repeat it a couple of hundred times
Nah but that's the biggest difference to me, techno is so damn repetive and boring (and not in the good, proggy sense). Trance can be repetive too but on a higher level, like a 4 bar melody repeated or something and not a one bar percussion loop with a synth stab. Also trance has a more defined and general track structure with the breakdown and stuff.

They all started with house music so I guess you could say that they're both the bastard children I think Trance focuses more on synth lines and melody often with vocals. Techno however is more of a bass and percussion thing with alot of flanging/phasing/filter effects and is often more repetitive.

Sure did brother, it started back in the 70's and 80's. Disco was underground and the first form of dance music (Dance music not electronic music so let's not get confused) of course it became popular with 'Saturday Night Fever' and they progressed it, pioneers like Frankie Knuckles and Marshall Jefferson. Many people say if it's electronic and you can feel it it's house music

This goes more in-depth
