Considering that you're on TA, you might wanna elaborate on who he is. (apart from him being Jazz on Fresh Prince)

Well long story short, he isnt like the most pioneering dj, but he's pretty damn close. I'd say he's the most pioneering mainstream dj. HE is beleived to have invented the transform scratch (using the crossfader, or upfaders to chop up the sound) so you can pretty much say he invented what scratching is. Whether or not he was actually the first person to do it doesnt matter, he was the one that made it well known.

Read this. http://remixmag.com/mag/remix_hes_not_dj/

Obviously he did more than invent the transform scratch, besides that he simply "rawks teh house" so to speak. Easily as well as any new dj. Even if you're not into hiphop you can still enjoy his mixes.

word.. back then, like 86/87, i dont think too many djs were on jeff's level... when dj jazzy jeff & the fresh prince started out, the focus was on the dj, jazzy jeff... will smith was just a hypeman and jeff was the star... things changed when the hip hop industry found out there is more money to be made by rappers than djs.....

Ok, I'm not big into turntablism, but from what I've heard in arguments (and thats alot) Grandmaster Flash amoung other djs started scratching first, but Its generally agreed that jazzy jeff was the first to invent the transform scratch.

Heres what he has said (Jazzy Jeff)

Did you really invent the transformer scratch?

Jeff: The first person I ever saw do anything similar to the transformer was DJ Spinbad - not the one everybody knows now; another DJ. It was extremely primitive and it had no name, but I took it and added the rhythm and a guy who was there said: 'That sounds like the transformer's opening up.' And we went and did a party and the MC was like: 'Check out Jazzy Jeff and his transformer scratch.' So, I might have been credited for revolutionising it and naming it, but it kind of makes me feel uncomfortable. In all actuality, the first person that ever was heard scratching was Grand Wizard Theodore, so we're all copying him.

Now I know that I've heard another famous pioneering dj (possibly flash) credit him for that technique as well, and I'm trying to find it.

For now I'll give you guys a reference about him made by James Zabiela, as I figure that will go over better on this forum.

What act/DJ will you make sure you see at the festival?

James: I'd like to see Jazzy Jeff, because he's an excellent DJ and he invented the transformer scratch years ago.

For now thats the best I can do

I don't think Flash discovered any scratches. Grand Wizard Theodore (I think) discovered the scratch by accident. Spinbad came up with transforming, but Jazzy Jeff used it to win the DMC championship and so made it wide-spread.
