Small Reason Tip

Everyone's gotta get as much db as possible out of reason, and here's a little trick you can use to grab 1 or 2 extra db. If there's a professional legitimate reason why NOT to do this, please let me know. It doesn't do anything except help me. Note the first EQ... just a simple roll off on the highest and lowest; all those freqs really do is eat some headroom. (It's still impossible to get it just right, considering how weak these PEQ-2 EQs are )

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't drop at those frequencies. You wouldn't want your track to sound like an mp3. Also, why do you need to get so much volume out of Reason?

I think he's talking about individual instruments, not the overall track. As you layer sounds and beats, you increase the energy level at different parts of the sound spectrum. If you cut out unnecessary frequencies, you reduce that energy level, allowing you to boost the volume of your instruments to taste, allowing for a louder (and if done right), cleaner mix.

Obviously you wouldn't want to roll off anything higher than 5k on a hihat, nor would you want to roll off anything lower than 100hz on your main kick drum.

Oh ok. It just looked like he had the whole mix going through those EQs.

Because I've never even tried to master, and reason is weak when it comes to final volume.

Oh I see. It's quite easy to boost the volume with VSTs. Waves L1-Ultramaximizer is really good. You should try.

Reason delivers suoerb soundquality. It's just a matter of which instruments and sounds you use. Becauase the quality of them can vary. And I wouldn't cut away freqs in Reason. Do that in soundforge afterwards Also do a spectrum analyzis to see what freq-areas needs to be boosted. Yup. Cut away all freqs below 20hz and all above 18khz

To cut low/high (which btw is really stupid to do within reason if you're gonna do it for the whole mix) it probably would be better to use the new EQ, and also to get a few extra dB's the limiter is nice.

sounds like a bump to me

good eq on each channel goes without saying...it helps to balance a mix and avoid unnecessary frequencies, but that's not really a mastering thing, it's a mixdown technique.
