Thumbs up The Salton Sea

Has anyone here seen The Salton Sea? It's a 2002 Val Kilmer movie about the world of drugs (mainly speed). I found it to be quite an interesting take on the subject of habitual drug use. This is the second movie with Kilmer which I've seen, where he has had to play a 'sketched' role (other being Jim Morrison in 'The Doors').

On a side note..I have kinda been on a Kilmer blitz, watching other movies of his (not intentially, although he is one of my favourite actors), which include The Saint and Ghost in the Darkness.

Before I end this little ramble, I'd like to know whom has seen the move 'Spartan', which stars Val Kilmer as well. From what I've read on IMDB.com, it seems to be a drama based loosely around a detective searching for a missing girl. I also saw it at futureshop for 9.99, so I might just buy it opposed to renting if anyone can strongly recommend it.

ahhh too much typing..must get up at 5am for work

I've seen both. Both were good films, albeit with completely different themes. Val Kilmer was actually pretty good in both roles. The tweaker in Salton Sea, and the stoic mercenary type in Spartan. I'd say that Spartan probably had the better story line, with the typical David Mahmet dialogue which has characters delivering lines that you really wouldn't expect anyone on Earth to ever say. Very slick though, with taut direction and an involving plot line.

Salton Sea has more of a jazzy, tweaked out feel to it. The atmosphere is created through flashbacks and moody music as well as strung out scenes which just goes to show how the world would look viewed through the eyes of a tweaker. Interesting, although with the drug theme there are quite a few other films that i think accomplished more content wise and stylistically.

Ultimatley both are satisfying flicks which are well worth renting.

PS. Not sure if i'd buy Spartan. It's not one of those movies that stand up to repeat viewings. That being said, It's definately worth renting if you haven't seen it. Val pulls of a pretty good job impression of the spartan warrior, and the story line does have nuff plot twists to keep the viewer engrossed.

Ditto to Kytracid's take on Spartan. Good rental but save your $9.99 for something better.

BTW...I'm a big Val Kilmer fan myself...But what's with all these dark movies he's been doing lately. Ever since he and wife split...his movie star roles have become very controversial...such as his take on porn star John Holmes in "Wonderland"

Yes I noticed that as well...Hmm..
Maybe his personal life is directly putting influence into his Hollywood career (as an actor and the roles he choses).

Thant's just my 2 cents.
