Good speakers?

well my next thing to get is speakers. i was looking at some self powered mackies at guitar center ,they were 549 and i loved them. the only thing is i dont know anything about speakers.

if im going to have them mostly in my house, with occasional gigs at friends houses what would everyone suggest? self powered or would it be better to get and amp and speakers? i have no clue, and what brands are good as for as speakers. i dont want to spend more then like 1200 for now, but im sure ill upgrade once i learn more about it

Mackies are usually good. Both their SRM450 actives and their studio monitors are great speakers. If you were to compare jbl eon 15G2 and SRM450 side by side, you will find the eons to have more bass but the mackie will sound more transparent and overall better.

Yeah the Mackie SRM450's are great speakers. I got a pair of these with 2 of the SWA1501 subs and they just pound. I would agree with what dj chex said.... The jbl's do have better low end but the mackie are much more accurate.

right, ok, for $1200... srm450s run about 700 ea so $1400, too much. There's also the b52 Matrix 1000 3piece system which sounds good for the price @ $700-$800. Then after you add stands for lets say $100, then cables for about $75 your then at $975 on the high side... Not bad for a system that will be sure to piss off your neighbors...

Wait, are you gonna do gigs w/ lots of people, or just a few friends chillin? If your not gonna throw large parties look into getting studio monitors. A very nice pair that a friend owns is the Event TR8s. Very transparent and bright, but also has solid mid and bass along with excellent imaging. Studio monitors are a personal thing so listen and decide which pairs you like the best. Here's my current favoriates in order:

Mackie HR824
Event Studio precision (can't remember which one)
Event 20/20
KRK V8
Event TR8
Krk Rockit 6

jesus, thats enough for gigs outside and inside right?
im thinking im going to save and get the 2 450, then upgrade with a sub and then eventually another one like you. but is that enough sound to handle most parties?

I've had the cops called on me for noise violations with parties using way weaker/craptacular setups then those mackies. ( try a dieing Peavey xr600f powered mixer w/ 2x 15" 2way peavy cabs)

I think your good as long as your party is <150 people. And by that time, theres other crap you need to worry about.

im a big fan of the jbls, solid speaker.

if you want to pay less, the peaveys should suit anything youd be doing for under 1200 fine i believe.

That is more then enough. The SRM450's may be labled as small portable PA speakers but I've done decent sized parties with them before I even had the sub's and it was more then enough. First time I really used them was in front of about 200 peeps outside. The only thing lacking was bass response because of the sub size and power built into the SRM's and it was outside. When it got late I then brought them down to a buddies basement and cranked them. Bass response from just those 2 speakers in a small-med size room was damn good...and the concrete walls also helped. When I added the subs bass response was huge even when it was outside. And of course when we tried those in an inside environment it almost sounded like a little club .
