Picotto @ Avalon review

Ok, Mauro @ Avalon. I've heard better sets by Mauro, but still think that he played an above average set. Nice tracks, including a lot of new ones that I need to get a hold of. It seemed to me that he's getting softer and softer these days, though, with small bits of the set not really doing it for me. Furthermore, even though I know he can mix creatively, it seems as he is more often than not going for a quick fade, or even a direct jump from one track to the other. But the awesome electro sounds and the hard beats (of the harder tracks) all made up for these minor quirks, I think. In addition, I thought it was hilarious to see the confusion on the faces of the podium dancers when Mauro went into one of his psycho-electro-no-beat-undanceable periods. Further, I thought it was very endearing to see Mauro make "boow"-sounds in tune to the music while trying to make clever "got ya there"-faces to the audience. An attempt that failed miserably because of the big smile on his face.

Some random questions that, for some reason, popped into my mind during the evening:

- Why do they put VIP-bracelets on *everyone* at the door? And why were *nobody* checked when entereing the VIP-area? Some kind of complementary ego-boosting service???

- I had carefully added my full name to the velvet-guestlist before going there. When I came to the guestlist guy, I said "Hi. I'm on the velvet-guestlist.". He looked appraisingly at me, and then, with no further discussion, nodded knowingly and handed me a "reduced"-ticket. Why would a great wizard of such awesome clairvoyant powers choose to work for a joint like Avalon?

- Why don't Avalon hire a bunch of eskimos with harpoons, to drag away all the non-dancing elements from the dancefloor? I swear to God, about 30-40% of the dancefloor was filled with people who were either smoking, making out, chatting, staring, or (worst) sleeping. What's the matter with such people?

- (Closely related.) Why are areas such as narrow staircases, exits, and restroom entrances such attractive places to have long debates, preferrably in big groups, on whether to go back or forth?

- Why would anybody pay $25+ to be at an event like this, only to try to pick up?

- Why do people wear sunglasses in a club? It's like 80-year olds having sex with condoms.

- Why don't Avalon invest in some decent air-conditioning? That room was extremely hot, and the air was just hanging there. You had to dance constantly to keep in contact with sub 100 degrees air.

- What is it that automatically grants someone with a glow stick plenty of space on a dancefloor? They're not dangerous, right?

- Is there something more annoying, than guys pushing through the crowded dancefloor by using their girlfriend as a bumper?

- Why does everyone hate Avalon?

Maybe I should go to the park to relax...

Hello!

well shall i start with saying that this was my first experience with avalon "thanks dave", it was shall we say.........decent, it wasn't horrible, although it was not anything for me to write home about, i have seen picotto a hand full of times "where he has been awesome" and i would have to say also it seems that he is beginning to loose his edge and becoming soft. i would have to say out of his 4 hour set i enjoyed about an hour of it, he was playing some really nice tracks with great build up and then throwing them down......but those were few and far between. it was nice to meet you joe "bitchboynyc"...for like 4 seconds.... hope to meet more of you guys soon

so in the end, i hope that pvd is better next weekend

I wear sunglasses to clubs to relieve pressure on my eyes from the lights. My astigmatism stresses me out as it is, the lights wear me out like crazy.

Hahahaha. this is the best party report.
Yeah, they have to get a new AC system but you never know what is better --no AC at Avalon or Ac at Crobar that freezes you to death. hahaha

I had a good time. I enjoyed the set alot. A little softer than I expected but overall no real complaints. His set at Space for WMC was better than this one. He had me awaiting a tremendous drop of a bassline after a build up on many songs, which didn't seem to hit the mark when they were dropped. Will def go and see him again though!!!

Yeah, well, it seems to me that Avalon itself cannot really be blamed for the horrors that take place there. Sure, the lack of air-conditioning should be addressed, but the main offenders are those absolutely despicable individuals that form part of the crowd. Don't know if it's because Avalon is in every goddamn tourist guide that they come there, or if there's some kind of secret society hell-bent on preventing the potential of the place to be realized. In any case, I can't see how Avalon can easily do something pro-active to get a better crowd???

Thank you. My friends say that I'm fun when I'm agitated, maybe that came across here. I guess I've repaid you for your Sven Vath and Judge Jules review then

Gee, I didn't know there could be a sound reason for this. I've learned something today. I'm usually bringing a minimum of accessories to a club, as it's a hazardous environment for anything that cannot survive being run over by a steamroller, so I couldn't understand why people would risk their expensive sunglasses. Is it the rapidly blinking lights that stress you out, or is it also steady lights (street lights, daylight, etc.)???

@BitchBoyNYC: Initially I tried being on the lookout for someone in grey pants and a black shirt. However, I'm colour-blind, so all green, red, and brown pants looked grey to me as well, and there were far too many of you guys, for it to be safe to ask each of you whether you were the "bitch boy"...
Maybe I'll see you some other time.
