From my experience playing with them, its apparent the 800 does have a lighter platter. I find it more difficult to control in terms of barely rotating the platter to beatmatch on 6%. The wave display the 1000 has, isnt a big necessity unless you play a lot of new things and you just dont know the song yet. It generalizes how the flow of the song goes.
I went with the 1000s as I dont want to upgrade later down the road. Although the best mixer I could afford (after the 1000 purchase) was the DJM-707, which Im sure after awhile I will upgrade that.

the 800 is definitely lighter
I prefer the feel of the 1000. Of course, I also prefer really heavy vinyl. I hate those light records.
Getting back to the CDJs, though the difference is definitely noticeable, you'll most likely be able to adjust to either one pretty quickly. I shouldn't worry about that too much.
Waveform display on the 1000 is nice, but I really like the SD card funtion. Being able to store loops, samples, and hot start points really allows you to take advantage of the digital format. I would never buy a CD deck without this feature unless I already had a full-blown sampler at my disposal. I think that alone (and the superior construction, and the fact that you'll likely find more 1000s when you play out) is worth the premium over the 800.
Cheers...

I own two CDJ-800s and I have used the 1000s before, although the 1000s have a more solid feel to them, and of course the .02 instead of .05 pitch increasment, I do not think the price is justified. I got two cdj800s for what I would pay for one 1000. I have been mixing for about 3 years now, and I also own a pair of M3Ds. I can mix flawlessly on my 800s with no problem anytime of the day with any song. If you have the money to blow on 1000s go for it, you wont be disapointed.
