Bush's War on Terrorism - Update April 2005
So how is ol' Bush's War on Terrorism going so far? Seems to be a fair question, given the fact that this was pretty much THE primary issue that Bush ran on for the election.
Well the WaPost has some latest polls, which overall continue to trend pretty shitty for Dubya. The only bright spot, the only one which he can continue to hang his hat on the majority here is his war against terrorism:
A. Social Security
Approve - 31
Disapprove - 64
B. Iraq
Approve - 42
Disapprove - 56
C. Economy
Approve - 40
Disapprove - 57
D. Terrorism
Approve - 56
Disapprove - 41
E. Energy Policy
Approve -35
Disapprove - 54

And before anyone dismisses this poll as "partisan" or "liberal", these numbers trend very closely to pretty much every other poll out there right now.
But back to terrorism, it continues to seem to be the one bright spot for Bush right now, right?
| quote: | WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. count of major world terrorist attacks more than tripled in 2004, a rise that may revive debate on whether the Bush administration is winning the war on terrorism, congressional aides said on Tuesday.
The number of "significant" international terrorist attacks rose to about 650 last year from about 175 in 2003, according to congressional aides briefed on the numbers by State Department and intelligence officials on Monday.
The aides were told the surge partly reflected an increased tally of violence in India and Pakistan related to the Himalayan region of Kashmir, which both countries claim, and the devotion of more manpower to the U.S. monitoring effort, which resulted in more attacks being counted overall.
The State Department last year initially released erroneous figures that understated the attacks and casualties in 2003 and used the figures to argue that the Bush administration was prevailing in the war on terrorism.
It later said the number of people killed and injured in 2003 was more than double its original count and said "significant" terrorist attacks -- those that kill or seriously injure someone, cause more than $10,000 in damage or attempt to do either of those things -- rose to a 20-year high of 175.

Oops! Well you can sure leave it to our Administration to be right on top of that one, right? I mean, if this is egg on Bush's face, that sharp-shootin' cowboy will likely be loadin' up his artillary, ready to take the fight to these lil' critter terrorists, right?

WASHINGTON - The State Department decided to stop publishing an annual report on international terrorism after the government's top terrorism center concluded that there were more terrorist attacks in 2004 than in any year since 1985, the first year the publication covered.
Several U.S. officials defended the abrupt decision, saying the methodology the National Counterterrorism Center used to generate statistics for the report may have been faulty, such as the inclusion of incidents that may not have been terrorism.
Last year, the number of incidents in 2003 was undercounted, forcing a revision of the report, "Patterns of Global Terrorism."
But other current and former officials charged that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's office ordered "Patterns of Global Terrorism" eliminated several weeks ago because the 2004 statistics raised disturbing questions about the Bush's administration's frequent claims of progress in the war against terrorism.
"Instead of dealing with the facts and dealing with them in an intelligent fashion, they try to hide their facts from the American public," charged Larry C. Johnson, a former CIA analyst and State Department terrorism expert who first disclosed the decision to eliminate the report in The Counterterrorism Blog, an online journal.
Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., who was among the leading critics of last year's mix-up, reacted angrily to the decision.
"This is the definitive report on the incidence of terrorism around the world. It should be unthinkable that there would be an effort to withhold it - or any of the key data - from the public. The Bush administration should stop playing politics with this critical report."
