Virus B/C DSP Comparison - Myth Destroyed

http://myslu.stlawu.edu/~almarc04/virus_results.rar

I think 2 mp3s in the archive speak for themselves...

EQ was turned off on the Virus C (this was a test to see if the Virus C DSP was in fact "cleaner")

hey but using eq to shape a patch makes a world of a difference, givin you use it correctly. Problem with the b is that it can sound muddy very quickly. Of course, you can record tracks to sequencer and use post eq, but kinda messes with the idea of using multimode.

edit: interesting, after taking a few listens, they sound a tad bit different - The C does sound a tad bit... dont know if cleaner is the word, but less bassy. Is the patch used on these samples done exactly, exactly the same? Amp envelopes sound a tad bit different and also the effects loudness - delay sounds louder on the B sample.

same exact patch.. amplitude may be a bit different Vs. the 2, but is basically the same

pre-eq is nice.. but who uses multi-mode

the Virus synths are all based on the same programming guys...given the fact that the B was a big upgrade from the A, but that was just technology coming into play. Access has never said that their synths were infact different synths...but what they have done is found something good and stuck with it. Just think of each synth as a technological upgrade from the next, like more voices, more features, expanded front panels, more knobs, better programming, ect.

Edit: oh and if you are wondering why you might hear a slight difference in each virus synth, well it partially has to do with the D/A converters. The D/A converters on the Virus A were 18 bit converters I believe adn on the B they used 20 bit and went higher on the C. Thats why the A sounds just that much dirtier than the rest.

nah the D/A converters on the virus b and virus c are both 24 bit. the D/A converters on the virus a are 20 bit.

all the A/D converters on all virus models are 18 bit.

although i seriously didnt notice much difference between the virus a and virus b. especially when programming single or dual oscillator sounds (since the virus a doesnt have a 3rd oscillator). the basic sound of the virus hasnt changed. the only thing that has changed is the feature set which has uniformly improved with each reiteration. the virus c sounds pretty much identical to the virus b if you dont use the virus c specific features (such as the moog filter type and the 3 band EQ)

so why get a virus c over a b?

assign slots baby!

the modulation matrix is in my humble opinion the most important and powerful part of the virus and the virus c has double the amount of assign slots as the virus b. thats double the amount of movement you can put into your sounds.
