I want to use white noise in the track I am working on. How do you get white noise to sound sweepy and bring it in on top of synths to give that whooshy sound? Do you use it with the synth (VSTi) or do you put it on a separate channel and then use it when and where you need it? Also which of the VSTi's is the best for that sound?

You can get great white noise from the freebie Synth1 and use the cut-off to make the sweep. Synth1 is so awesome, I can't believe it's free. I have the latest version...if you cannot find it or download it, let me know so I can send it to your e-mail. If you just use Cool Edit, Audition or another program to generate the noise, you can make the sweep by using a phaser, fiter or using a filter VSTi...I have Korg Legacy and it has the MS20 filters as an effect plugin...works great for the white noise sweeps and swooshes. =o)

So how do you get the white noise to sound like its rising or dropping?

Run your white noise through a low pass filter, then close the cut off all the way, then sweep the cutoff. As the cut opens up, the noise will become brighter and brighter, giving the woosh effect.

Remember to increase the Res a bit, about 1/4 should be good. The more res, the more it will sound like a laser gun.

Vanguard is very good for that type of effect too - you can put different types of white noise through 3 oscillators, automate your cut off filter, and also add some gate for that stuttering effect. Im only just learning to do all that too and find Vanguard easy to get to grips with.
Am i right in saying also messing with the LFO also makes it rise and drop?

One question. With regards to using white noise in Vanguard. How do I stop the slight synth sound that is behind the white noise when I press a key. I just want white noise, I have set all three osc to white noise, but I still get a synth noise from whatever preset it is on. Do I need to use a blank patch and if so, how do I get one?

Ok I'll give you a quick tip on how to use Vangaurd to produce a white noise woosh very fast.

Open Vangaurd, then switch to the FX Scratchin' MS patch (near the end of the bank).

Then turn the Arp OFF, and the Trance gate OFF.

Then in the LFO, reset the Cutoff to zero.
Then in Envelope 1, increase the sustain to at least 50%.

You may or may not want to change the filter to a lowpass filter. That M filter works ok too.


To take things a little further, in the envelope 1 controls, you could turn the cutoff knob up all the way, then increase the attack to around 3 seconds. Then close the cutoff on the filter completely. What this does is applys the envelope to the filter. Since you set the filter to something like 0 Hz, the note will start off silent, and since your attack is three seconds, the envelope will slowly increase the cutoff until it reaches the level you set in the envelope. Then all you have to do is have Vangaurd play a note for three seconds, and you have an instant woosh. The woosh may happen to fast for your liking, but it's just an example to show you the possibilities.

You could get even crazier by using the second envelope and apply it to the cutoff and the res, or whatever. Or you could even use the LFO to automate the cutoff of your woosh.

Or you could just record the automation by hand. This will probably give you the best result.

I am gating the white noise and I can't get the trancegate in Vanguard to sync up the track. Should it be in sync? And if so how can I adjust it pls?

You can also try lin plug Albino. In it's preset library you can find ready made noise effects. It also has 3 types of noise (white, brown and pink) and it's filters sound great.
P.S. I wasn't payed to say this.

But can you sync it up to midi?
