DEMF Weekend: Finally some sober thoughts...
Well, now that I'm back as close to 100% as I'm ever going to be, and extremely bored at work, here's my synopsis of my DEMF weekend...
Saturday:
Flight gets in early, so early in fact I'd have to wait far too long for Joe at the airport so I grab a cab into the hotel. Upon arriving in downtown Detroit I think to myself "Hmmm... this place isn't as bad as I was told, looks pretty decent, and hey, there's DEMF right on the waterfront, that looks cool..."
Then I arrived at the hotel.
The Days Inn Downtown Detroit is a frightening place for a kid from Central Wisco. In the first 30 minutes after I had checked into the hotel I was:
- Asked if I could score any rocks 1 time...
- Asked for change or a few dollars from the guy digging through the garbage directly outside my room 5 times (The doors on the rooms opened right out into the open; our room was on the third floor, this dude was working the whole joint...)
- I turned on the water to get a drink, it ran brown...
- And I, rather unpleasantly, discovered a bathroom as dirty as my own at home... hey, it's ok when it's your own...
Found a phone book, called the Comfort Inn downtown, got a room at a "Business Rate" (I was definitely taking care of business this weekend!) and as soon as Joe arrived we were outta there... thank God I brought enough loot to get the hell outta there...
In any event... we got to the hotel, met up with everyone, got ready, went to Bleu that night for Elevation, KT, and MS. Anyone who read the cracked out post I left for the road or my first DEMF review saw what I thought of the sets, but quick and dirty one more time through:
Elevation - Good track selection, solid mixing, wish they would have let us in for the whole set...
KT - Solid mixing, but in all honesty it just wasn't what I wanted to hear right then. I talked to KT on Sunday about it, and he made a good point, there really wasn't anyone there, so he had nothing to really work with. I love KT, especially "Obsessions," but it just wasn't my scene on Saturday night, so I saw...
Marcus Beier - I can't say anymore good things about Marcus or Quadlow or they'll either get too large of heads and become dicks or they'll think I'm gay... So in lieu of something good, this time I'll just say they sucked...
Markus Schulz - Once again, I like Markus Schulz. He played "The Deep Show." I was happy
Following the show I proceeded to party in true festival fashion, which basically kept me in bed almost all day on Sunday, and when I finally did cruise it from the hotel it was to Envy for Marcus & Quadlows sets, and to meet up with the wonderful folks I met on Saturday night, regarding the sets at Envy: See above review of DJ Marcus Beier...
Following Envy I cruised it back over to Bleu for my very first experience with Junkie XL, and my God was I blown away... Junkie XL is probably closer to a one man band than a DJ, and man does that guy know how to put on a show. I was absolutely floored, and even though I wasn't sure I was ready to go another night when I was headed to Bleu, JXL got me ragin all over again...
Following that, well, some of you saw the post that came around 8 in the morning from Phreek and I... all in all it was a great weekend... I was paying for it yet this morning, but things are (relatively) back to normal.
Final Thoughts: I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat... this was better than all the years at Bonnaroo, and I'd say the only other event that compares in my book is Phish @ Big Cypress 12/31/99... It was really good to see all the TA's again, it was awesome to meet the Forward Detroit/DCS crew, and I will definitely be making my way back to Detroit before the summer is over...
Thanks Detroit,
Rob
