I'm trying to figure out what to start of mixing with, and here is my question. I would saw a lot of money if I was mixing with cd's because they can be burned and I could save a lot of money, but can you produce the same effect while mixing cd's compared to vinyl???

Please help I'm confused what to purchase cd's decks or record players??
what would you guys recommend to buy what mixer and what cd or vinyl players???? in the average cost nothing high end I'm just starting off. thanx

I like turntables. FIrst off, they are much more fun. Cd's are just not as fun. also, if you play a gig, the analog sounds (records) are much more preferred because they sound quite a lot better at higher volumes. that's my 2 cents.

This is just my 2cents and I'm probally going to catch alot of flack for this but I really don't consider CD mixing as proper Djing.
The true art behind Djing is all in the platter control i.e being able to drop the 1 beat on the 1 beat perfect everytime, this is the part that actually kills people when trying to learn how to Dj, its a simple wrist motion but it requires alot of skill. If you dont start the 1 beat on the 1 beat, you really cripple yourself when trying to pitch the bpm of the record up or down to flow with the one your mixing into.

People who mix CD they just press a button and it starts autmatically, there's no real skill involved!

I'd buy turntables.

I'd go for vinyl for different reasons.

The pitch on a CD isn't as accurate as on a TT. There tends to be a gap between let's say 5.1 and 5.2, which makes beatmatching quite a bitch. You constantly have to use the jog wheel or the pitch bend to keep the records in sync. It's a lot easier to correct errors on TTs. You have a better feeling for what you're doing and it's also a lot easier to find a certain part of a song. Also, in my experience, when you speed up a tune on vinyl or on cd, they tend to sound different(in my opinion a speeded up vinyl produces a nicer sound than a cd). And don't forget those nice rumbling bass sounds that are produced by vinyls. Cds simply can't compete with that. And on a personal note I really don't like the counting down thingy on cds, it makes me incredibly nervous. I love the fact that you can just see where the vinyl's gonna end. That's a lot more reassuring since you aren't fighting against the clock.

This is my opinion and is obiously very subjective. I hope noone is offended by it. There a lot of things that are in favor of cds(e.g. availibility of classic tracks, which are incredibly hard to come by on vinyl). I simply don't like cds because you can't touch them while playing. You don't feel the music. Please take into account that I don't have a lot of experience in mixing with cds.

i say go with vinyl... start buying vinyl now, and then get the tech 12's later when you have a nice collection going...
someone posted a comment on this in another thread, don't bother with the midlle area stuff, just go for the tech 12's cause you get the mid-range turntables and you just keep spending your cash on more vinyl and never really save up for better decks

don't even bother with CDJs... start with turntables, unless you have a job that requires you mix with CDs... you'll wind up kicking yourself in the end

It's sad that most of the people are biased.. I think that vinyl is a great upgrade for a dj, but as a begginer I would reccomend getting cd's and if you like em step up to vinyl. cds are cheaper, you dont have to spend your money on vinyl, and its a good way to see if you like it. I personally just ordered two cdj-20's and a bpm-150 (gemini) from audiolines.com for about 470$ including shipping. because I too was in that confusion... (great gear for the price!) but I have two friends who mix cds, one who does raves in CA and one who mixs at a club in Colorado.. and they love cds!! they too started on cds, and later bought tt's to add, but still use both about half and half-

as a begginer I would reccomend cds to make sure you like it.. and take an upgrade after you figure you do

and oanother thing?? no skill involved with mixing cds?? where do you come from?? HAVE YOU EVER MIXED CDS?

To answer your question yes I've mixed CD, and I stand by my statement no skill involved.

to do cds right it takes tons of skill, mayb even more than vinyl, to do it well, there are many people who mix cds terribly, but someone good with it can do the same or better as people good with turntables

ok... i was going on the assumption that Bandit already knows he want's to DJ... if you're still sketchy about it, don't even bother buying anything until you know for sure you want to DJ... otherwise that's a HUGE waste of money

if you're just interested in DJing right now, then get friendly with a DJ, and try things out with thier stuff... then you'll know for sure if you want to DJ or not, without wasting the cash

No guys I never mixed cd's I only tried it once but with a bad mixer I love to do it though I done it a lot of times on the computer buts its not the same hands on experience as with a real mixer.

Well as one person pointed out that cd's would be cheaper, so I guess cd would be better for me, but I am not sure.
