The only money you might want to invest in is on a midi keyboard, it will make banging out melodies a lot easier, and possibly a decent soundcard, depending on the one you have atm. If your current one has half decent ASIO support, you might be allright.
As for software, theres a few choices. A lot of people use VST based softsynths in combination with either Cubase, Logic (if your on a Mac) or FL studio. Theres also Propellerheads Reason which is an all in once studio which can produce some good results but lacks the flexibility of 3rd party plugins.
Tips? Beginning songs? Remixes? Just get yourself some software first and start messing around and twiddling knobs. You'll be busy figuring out your ass from your hands for the next 3 months. Come back after then
