Most if not all serious producers will tell you to never mix/master with your headphones, bascially since headphones are so close to your ears you can never get an accurate idea of the true spacial sound if that makes scence.. if you think about real life, we dont have every sound we hear come from an inch from our ears, its that sence of distance which you cannot monitor with headphones..
That being said, if you dont want or cant spend $400+ on a decent pair of monitors.. I would suggest the following headphones which will do a better job than a pair of really cheap monitors.
Sennheiser HD25's
Sony MDR7509
and for your other question, you should be able to run your synth into a pedal then into your DAW whichout an issue.

There is no way you can use headphones to master. It doesnt matter how good quality they are; they won't be able to give you that vibration and punch of bass. There is no comparison.
Just get a good stereo system like a Sony, JVC, Aiwa or something.
I used my harman/kardon speakers for a while before I got my crest monitors. You can get small speakers for the job (little cubes), but make sure there is a sub. Creative, Cambridge, and Bose have some similar products too.
And yes, you can certainly use a distortion pedal for that job. (it will sound amazing)
