Best DAW for PC under $1,000?

I'm getting ready to make the big jump from Reason and would love some advice. The biggest debate I keep getting is Live vs. Cubase3sx that are with in my price range. I want something that my creative energy can flow efficiently with, but I also want something powerful and with great sound. Please help!

There really is no simple answer to that. You can make a number one hit on software from the 80s. It may take longer but it can be done and for well under $1000. What I am getting at is, the software doesnt make your sound powerful or efficient, its how you use that software. Asking which program would be best for you is like asking people what your favorite fruit should be. Everyone has different opinions on what they like best and what is most efficient for them but the same does not apply to everyone.

Heres a short list of how I view each of the big contenders:

FL Studio XXL ($300) - freeform layout, somewhat buggy in some instances, strong in internal effects and some instruments and strong in support of external plugins.

Reason 3.0 ($500) - rackmount style productions, slight cumbersome layout for higher resolutions and lack of external plugins is hindering, strong in built in synths and effects.

Sonar 4 ($479-Studio, $959-Producer) - multitrack recording style, lack of built in synths and built in support of vsts is hindering, strong in studio effects and midi multitracking.

Cubase 3 (SL-$539, SX-$1079) - multitrack recording style, lack of support for dx instruments and effects is a dissappointment, strong in built in effects and instruments

Logic 7 ($1000-Pro, $300-Express) - multitrack recording style, lack of windows supports is a big dissappointment, strong in built in effects and somewhat in instruments and very strong in samples.

I hope this list helps you decide. I've used all of these and have settled for FL Studio because I liek its freeform layout. FL Studio has come a very, very long way in terms of quality over the past few years. No other big name host offers the ammount of support that FL Studio offers. Though, if you choose FL Studio, be prepared to dish out some extra cash for better synths. Sytrus is the best it offers out of the box at the $300 XXL package and while its not the best internal synth offered of all the synths included with the other packages, most of the other packages offered are much more expensive with plugins that have just slightly higher timbre than Sytrus. With the great support of external plugins, its easy to pick up some other third party plugins and still be ahead of the budget with better quality. But between the two youve mentioned, Ive only used one so I'd have to say go for Cubase but from my own opinion, check into FL Studio.

There are a few others you might check out but ones that I havent used:
Ableton Live (mentioned in first post I know)
Project 5 v 2
Pro Tools
Digital Performer
Acid Pro

Hope this helps .

Cheers,
Zac

The best would be combining Fruity Loops XXL with Cubase SX 3.
Or Reason 3.0 with Cubase SX 3.0, I think each other complement very well, but I'd go for the first one, I work with Fruity Loops and I'll never change it as it is getting stronger every version.
Also, I wouldn't jump from Reason, keep Reason and combine it with another sequencer, you'll notice the great results.
