approach of dynamicsprocessing

The thing that has not come clear to me for a long time is what strategy is best used when using gating/compression/dynamics processing.

When do you start? Do you merge drum+bass first and then apply gating? What do I do with the other instrument-tracks? Or do you apply gating at the very end of the production process, only once?

Basically I want my track that now looks like this: (up)

look like this (down) in the best process possible, to give the best quality.

I believe the gatingtechnique for letting that kickbass come out is a very important part in trancemusic.

I don't have enough experience with this, so I hope one of you can give me a clear view on how to approach this. Thanks.
