i have to travel to another town to dj (4 hours drive). last time i went with 100 record case. had to climb up stairs, unload from the bus, from the car. i was too tired to play. now i am thinking of 30 records and 10 cdr. that is worth about 16 hours of music and means lighter weight for me.

do you think a dj showing up with 30 records and 10 cdr for a 4 hour set is inappropriate ?

no way

if you know exactly what you will play then yes, mathematically it is possible.

What it doesnt take into account is the crowd, requests and your ability or want to dictate the flow of the night away from what would have to be a pretty much preset routine.

To put it in perspective- for a 1.5 hour slot, at minimum I personally would take one large UDg softbag (between 90-100 12"s) and a cd wallet with a lot more than 10 cds.

For a 4 hour set, I would be taking several bags of vinyl- probably nearer 300 in total of them, or the equivalent number of cds

But then, I try to be prepared for anything and like to have a greater choice.

btw- what you just described, i do quite often - couple of hours drive, unload, play for hours (can be up to 6 sometimes) then load and drive home. Part of the job dude. If yu dont like it then either go 100% cd, get a bag bitch, or go work in asda instead

make sure you dont bring anything you might not need..

make sure its all relevant.

why odnt u bring like 40 cdr, its not hard, and make sure u have 2 copies of each cdr, so then you can play tunes in a row you couldnt have normally

haha, god damn. 300 12" for a 4 hour set? The longest I've ever played out was 3.5 hours and I brought my UDG packed very tight...probably aboout 80 records, plus a pretty fat cd case. It was an opening set so I knew I could leave out the harder or more aggressive stuff.

I always always plan and bring records so that I can play a few completely different styled sets if called upon to do so. But I think for a 4 hour set 30 records and 10 cds shoudl work if you know pretty much what you're going to play.

It really depends a lot on your mixing style. For me that wouldn't be enough, probably nowhere near enough. Some DJs mix 8 records in an hour and some like to mix 20 records in an hour. I'd try to take more CDs if weight is a problem but I do think you're going to want more tracks.

ermmm stuff more records in...my bag holds 80...i stuff 60 in...plus my cd pouch which holds 200 cds(though not fully filled)....

10 cdr @ 80 minutes = 800 minutes. divide that by 60 its over 13 hours of music. all are from my vinyls.

30 records. average song length 5 minutes. 30 x 5 = 150 or 2 1/2 hour of more music.

total is 15 1/2 hour of music.

i think it is more than enough for a 4 hour set. i can take my 4 udg or more. but am i playing music or showing my record collection. that is the point.

when i play closer, i can take 2 bags. but this is a far gig ! and i am alone. no assistance. no friends.

do people care for music or how much collection has the dj brought with him ?

yes but u dont play every track for its full length (at least i hope not) u can easily knock at least 2 mins off each track

personally i think 30 vinyl and 10 cd is probably enough but 4 hours is a long time and if u want to change ur mix in the middle u mite be caught short

Seems a little light to me. Me, 2 hours, I come armed with about 80 to 100 records. Some nights you never know what you'll end up playin'.

I don't understand why people ask these silly questions when they get a gig honestly.

Play what got you the gig. Whatever made the promoter/manager put you on the line-up is what he/she wants you to play. And that should be what you wanna play, right?

Who cares how many records you bring to the gig. Do whatever suits you and gets the crowd going.
Be yourself and have fun!
And make sure you enjoy what you play and let the crowd know it.

there is just a confort zone when you have more vinyl. I am sure you can make it work, but if I was you id at least triple up on cdrs.
