Question Fellow DJ's Help Me If You Can!

Hi all fellow DJ's,

O.K. Here's my problem. I have tons of vinyl and just recently built a really nice cabinet storage system of drawers for all my vinyl. I decided to catalog all my vinyl by the year printed and then in order by the BPM of the track. I came to find quite a few pieces of vinyl with no date of print anywhere on the label or the vinyl itself. Since I have a lot of good music all the way back from the 80's to 2005 I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a way to hunt down the date of print on vinyl that doesn't have it stamped on it. Now don't misunderstand me, I have tried to contact the labels of some of these, and also other various efforts have been made. I have come to find that many of the labels aren't even around anymore. I was hoping that maybe someone knows of some type of data base for finding print dates by Artist Name and track title. If any of you DJ's know of such a site please relpy to this thread. I have a ruff idea for the most part of about when the pieces where released, but I would really like to know for sure so I can catalog and organized my collection accordingly. All help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

DJ MADNESS

Just a constructive thought here; why don't you sort your records alphabetically by record label or alphabetically by artist name? I know I sort mine ascending by record label and IMO it is the easiest and most efficient way to catalogue vinyls and I'm happy with it. There is no hassle of dealing with the inconsistencies of genres, bpm, or date of release and it doesn't matter how big your collection gets as you will always be able to place the record appropriately. However, if you don't care to organize by the suggestions I gave, then I agree with using Discogs. For the most part, the year of print is listed, but many also are not. Other than Discogs, searching Google may bring up some release info on certain records.

Thanks again for the input,

The reason I wanted to catalog by year is that I have people who want mixsets from certain years (i,e to bring back memories of times we had say back in 1999 for instance). If I had all of my vinyl cataloged by year this would be most helpful. As it stands now most of my music is either cataloged by artist of by BPM, which is fine also, however I just have to do a lot more digging when a certain type of mixset is requested. Thanks for the info from all.
