needle jump/fast forward to the loudest/busiest section of the track and match the meters, then match the cue level to program level using my ears (not meters) too.

does your mixer have level indicators? (those lights that bounce up and down)

Yep this is what I do. Overtime I've gotten pretty good at judging where the levels are by ear and since I usually beatmatch in my headphones with the tunes blended together I just adjust the levels while I'm beatmathing.

One odd thing I've noticed, and maybe I'm just nuts, but I have a few tunes that on the EQ meter they're hittinbg where I need them to tbe but when I mix it at that level it's noticeably lower than the outgoing track. Anyone ever get this??

Yeah it depends on the mixer to an extent. It happened a LOT when I had my gemini mixer back in the day, and a fair amount with my behringer. Now with my denon dnx1500 it's really rare...the level meters are much more accurate.

All mixers meant for djing have level indicators. As for four channels...do you mean four channels or four inputs?

What I mean is..most mixers have two channels, but you can hook up at least four inputs to it. Then you just switch which input is which channel. For example you have two turntables and two cd players hooked up. You are playing vinyl on channel one, then mix into vinyl on channel two, then switch channel one to the cd player and mix into cd on channel one, etc. The only difference between that and a four channel mixer is that you can only have two of your four things playing on the speakers at a time, whereas the four channel would allow four at a time.

Since you're obviously a beginner, I'd probably recommend the two channel version, since it's a lot cheaper and you won't be mixing more than two things at a time.

I personally start drifting away everytime I mix, so I usually just listen through my cue and match them there.

It doesn't happen very often though and less so after I got my X1500 it just miffs me a bit to have the levels on the VU meters spot on and it still be noticeably quieter. Oh well......
