Big Ears Rune - Calabria (The Bass Foundation Remix)

it's been a LONG while since i've posted a track in here, but i'm back

this is a trance version of Calabria by Rune. it's got some techy influences as well; i haven't really produced anything like this before (hopefully that's a good thing, hehe)

you can download the full version here (192kbps):

for those of you who don't know the original, here's a small sample:

techy perc in the beginning.

really cool how you bring up the bass in, some reverbed effects and stuff.

The bass it self dissapoints me, it seems just not right and yes the tune didn't even start yet just a feeling.

1.37 oh ya funky sound (y)

i think the kick could use a tiny bit more punch.

i miss some funky sounds or pads or something in the break.

Awesome basstring! did that well.

the bass after the break is much cooler. can't say i like the melody. Taste i suppose.

ya thats it i suppose, really liked the beat after the break

As I said @ BeTA forum, great work!

I love the strings and the way you worked out the whole track. I agree with Massive the bassline is maybe the only minor point, all rest sounds good.

Greetz,
Wim

thanks a lot for your comments!

could you be a bit more specific about the bass? it sounded fine on my speakers.. or is there something wrong with the pattern?

Ok, I've never heard the original, but here goes...

Awesome percs to start us off. Sound really interesting. Plenty of effects in there too which is nice. Bass sounded cool when it came in, i'd like to hear that on a decent set of speakers. 2 minutes in and first hint of a melody. It's nice and subtle; compliments the percs nicely. Not keen on the synth sound that comes in at 2:40. It sounds like it's phased or something. Bass is on the move again, really gives the melody a new sound. Build up is nice but it sounds like it doesn't have enough energy coming out of it, although that subtle chime melody is a real beauty! Lovely break at 5:20, nice strings! That lead sound was pissing me off a bit though - I'm convinced it has a phaser on it or something!

Sorry about the staccato review, but I was just typing as I listened. Good tune, I will definitely listen some more. Thanks for sharing!

I was expecting the kick to be a bit larger I guess...it sounds kinda weak to me.

thats all I could dig up as an improvement. I like the entire thing.

It's nothing on the production of the bass I think, just the sound of it... It works in the mix though, so actually it's just rather nitpicking. All is good

haha, no phaser mate

there are actually two instruments for that melody.. a violin type sound and a sharper synth with some resonance.. i guess the synth is a bit too loud in comparison to the violin sound.

and that chime is actually a guitar but with some effects of course..

anyway, thanks for listening everyone

Very nice indeed, chunky bass like it, even if the others don't...

erm

Can't think of any real negative points? Perc's good, all sounds tight etc...

9/10

(Scale: 0 = don't bother, 1-3 = needs work, 4-5 = nearly there, 6-8 = releasable, 9-10 = I'd play it)

can't agree more,

cool percussion mate, you should change this bassline, it's too generic for my taste, the melody doesnt really touched me, although good work on the mixing,

keep it up!

Peter

Nice track mate, nice track, I can't complain, they don't like the bass because is generic, sometimes generic elements suit well certain tracks, and this is one of them.

As you can see, it is always a matter of opinion.
