Another Mac vs. PC Thread

But this is a bit more specific.

Now:

I have loads of PC programs already bought:

V-Station
Vanguard
Cubase SX
Fruity Loops 5
and tons of pc vst's...

so im getting more gear but this time im upgrading my computer. Upgrading as in 1 PC for casual everyday use and the other for production and ect.

So, ive got to choose between these 2:

Mini Mac:
1.25GHz PowerPC G4
1GB DDR333 SDRAM
ATI Radeon 9200 with 32MB DDR video memory
40GB Ultra ATA hard drive

or

Custom PC(built by me with tiger direct parts):
Pentium 4 3.0Ghz Hyper-Threading
2GB DDR400 RAM
160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive
256MB Geforce 6800 GT OC

Basically i think im going for the PC, saves money, costs pretty much the same as that mac.

JKust want peoples perspectives on what is better...

I think you would find that PC would outperform that Minimac by a pretty hefty ammount. The ratio between Mac CPU Mhz and Intel CPU Mhz isnt that great. I think its about an extra 50% for G4 compared to P4. Plus you've listed more and higher speed ram with the PC setup. And whats with the tiny HD on the Mac. They cant expect it to be taken seriously with a drive that small?! Can you upgrade or it fused in there the the iMac?

Only reason I would see to get the mac is if you really, really wanted to use Logic.

Go Wintel, dont believe the hype...

I am both a pc user and a mac user and I would say if you are considering getting the MacMini I would go with the PC almost anyday.

For real work, the G4 is aging. I would only use them for serious producing in a dual processor system. Plus your home built PC will be way more expandible than the MacMini.

thanks for the feedback. Im going with the PC. Not only will it be good for producing but for other things aswell. It costs as much as the minimac aswell..actually cheaper. $705..minimac with mouse/keyboard=$789.

edit: im getting 2 gigs of Dual Channel Ram so bigger difference too.

In this time, I wouldn't buy a mac over a PC for production unless it's a G5 or preferably dual G5.

However, if you want to learn logic, you could learn it on a cheaper system first, but an upgrade would be in order for later, especially with such a computer-intensive genre.

I'd go with the Mac, I haven't tryed the minimac myself however it seems like you can make a very powerful machine out of it.

Cheers
