Bartel and Young - Indiscretion

This is a collaboration between a friend, my brother, and myself. I guess I would say it's melodic trance. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!!

Bartel and Young - Indiscretion (128kbps)

Cheers!
Brian

I think you display a good knowledge of music arrangement and you know your trance!
Everything fit well....maybe too well. Like cookie cutter.
But production wise its fabulous! The kick was a little quiet, but heck, they don't have to shake the pictures off the walls... do they?

I also am a big melodic freak, so this was nice to listen to. I love that niggly little synth that plays that note almost pitching up and down and up and down. That's a great effect.

The break was cool. The vocal ahhhs were a bit over the top...
Nice piano parts. The whole song is cool. Top notch really!

Hey.

-Good groove at the begining. THe crunch seems a little weak though. I'm hoping theres a stronger bassline coming.
-Bassline came in but it isnt full enough. It need to be FAT, like obese. There are several way to do this. The first and probably best sounding, in my opinion, is with a 2 or more osc instrument, detune them a bit and make sure none of them are detuned the same. This will make the sound very full. Be sure not to detune them too much though or else you will make them actually sound out of tune and thatll ruin the song. Another way is to use PWM (pulse width modulation). Turn it up a little bit on the second and 3rd (leave the first off) osc and itll beef it up a lot too but in my opinion, not as much as the first way. The last way is to use a chorusing plugin. It works kind of like the detune method but ends up creating a more stereo effect and while making the sound thicker, it should be the last choice in the bunch because it isnt nearly as effective and can have an adverse effect on the bass of the sound.
-Your kick is a bit weak. Bring up the lower frequencies and/or compress the shit out of a loud kick. You want the sound to be punchy, not just blehahhhh .
-Good synth work. I like the crying down arpeggio.
-The underlying pads are good.
-The break is great. I love the piano you used. Very light and fluffy and very euphoric. I'm not so much for the vocal bursts though. They go against the summery feeling the song puts out.
-The break-in needs a bit of work. It needs to be EXPLOSIVE, like a massive wall of sound coming at you all of a sudden. Two things I already mentioned, the kick and the bassline corrections, will help this out a lot but two other sounds could make it even more explosive. You could use somethign called a hit, which is basicly a sudden thud or crash with a heavy, thick sound (like a foot stomping but lower) or a crash cymbal. Use that in combination with a lowpass filter. Think of the filter in a scale of 0%-100% with 0% being 10Hz (or the bottom of your filter[fully closed]) and 100% being 16000Hz (or the top of the filter[fully open]). When the break starts, youll want to take all the continuing instruments (the ones that continue into the break) and all the instruments that start up in the down to around 20%-40% (each instrument could and probably should go down to a different level). Over the course of 8 or 10 measures, raise the levels up to 65%-75% and immediately when the kick comes back in, raise them all to 100%. The sound will be much more explosive .
-The outro compliments the intro nicely along with being quite DJ friendly.

Overall, this track does have some potential to be pretty good but there are some key elements to focus on. Throughout the track, it seems weak, not thick enough, almost like its played through a telephone. With a little EQ, this track could be tons better without any of these other tips. I look forward to hearing the final version as well as other works by you guys .
Grade B (needs some work but will ultimately be a good trancer)

Cheers,
Zac

Thanks for the input so far guys. I kind of felt the same way about the break in, was just trying to figure out what to do to beef it up. Will definitely test your ideas out! Thanks for the great descriptions of how you think we could help the track out!!!!

Are you talking about the ones during the breakdown or the more female sounding ones in the beginning, or both?

Hey. The deep, horror-movie-ish ones in the break .

Cheers,
Zac
