moving to montreal??

wassup montreal, ta from pennsylvania here... I'm currently checking out different music recording programs at schools around either nyc, toronto or montreal, and the program at musitechnic in montreal definately sounds pretty appealing. now, as i have never been to your fine city, i was hoping for a little opinion on the general way of life up there?? meaning, is the cost of living really as low as i read?? how much does an average studio or one bedroom apartment go for? also, everything with the language situation... obviously coming for the united states of a-suck-ica, english is what comes easiest. would i be able to survive in the crazy world that is quebec?? i do know a very small amount of french, and am positive i'd be able to pick up more as i went along, but in the beginning stages, i just want to be sure i wouldn't be getting in way over my head. the program at the school is taught in english, so i'm not concerned about that... that's about all i can think of for the moment. anyone who can tell me anything, please know i truely, truely appreciate it, as i really have no other first hand connection to anyone in montreal other than my beloved ta's!!! thanks guys

of course if you want to take the jump and enjoy a different way of life for the length of your studies then wait no more.

I suggest to visit for a week the city and get a sense and general atmosphere of it.

A friend of a TA just moved here from Philly and he's still in shock ... he loves it.

housing is (still) cheap but on the rise, a one bedroom all equipped could go for 900C$ (720$ US)in a decent location. You can find cheaper stuff if you look around (you need to visit).

as malek said, try to come here for a few days to see what it's like first. one thing for sure is life is way cheaper here than NYC (and even toronto i think). as for the french/english thing, don't worry almost everybody speaks english in this city, and there are a shitload of english speaking only peeps here, don't worry at all about that

hey peace and trance! i kinda know how you feel. i'm moving to Montreal for a month (June 22-July 22) to see how I like living there. I'm staying in the NDG region which is an English-speaking area. And my apartment that I'm renting from a friend who is away in Europe is costing me $400. I don't think that's a bad price, seeing that I have access to an indoor and outdoor pool, weight room, sauna, and all that cool stuff.
But I have already been to Montreal a few times, so even though I don't really know anyone, I still know a bit about the city and where to go. I suggest that you definitely go there (even if for a weekend) just to get a feel for the city. good luck!

Katie

1. Hope you got a nice warm winter coat. Our winters are probably worst then urs. Sometimes hits -40 dF with the windchill, was like that for a whole week 2 winters ago.
2. For the summer its just way to humid. Sometimes hits 100+ dF

You'll get used to Montreal. Take a while, but you'll get used to it.

DUDE, listen to me. I'm in Pittsburgh right now, but lived most of my life in Montreal (where I grew up). GET THE HELL OUT OF PA, exspecially Wilkes-Barre and get your ass to Montreal. YOU WILL DIEEEEEEEEEEEEE OF EXCITEMENT there, and you'll never wanna leave. You'll become Canadian and curse the US of A, and you'll want to marry a hot Montreal chiquita and settle there. So take it from someone who's lived in both places, and MOVEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Montreal is the place to live!
I moved to Calgary last year from Montreal March 2004 - August 2004,
and boy did I miss the city more than my friends and Family. I had to move back.

You will never find another place to live like Montreal,
we have it all!!!!!!!

Living expenses are not too bad way better than Toronto and New York, but it really depends on where you live in the city. Certain regions cost a lot and some are cheap, then you have the middle areas too. You really have too look.

The french and english situation has really never been an issue to anyone I have ever met, usually everyone is bilingual.

I hope everything works out for you, and you end up here.

Take care.

Only reason i want to leave is the winters, they fuck me over for training. If I can somehow I'd like to live in Mtl during the summer than somewhere else for winter. They should build i giant greenhouse over the mtl island to keep us warm.

The harsh winter is necessary in order to make sure that the population of Montreal doesn't spiral out of control. Imagine how overpopulated montreal would be if we had a clement winter. We'd break records because everyone would want to live there. Hot chicks wearing mini skirts ALL YEAR ROUND. J'peterais des clous
