Backwards vinyl....?

Was thinking of an idea.... does anyone know or has seen a backwards vinyl? Meaning the track would start playing from the center and the needle would move outwards. It seems fesible on paper... but does it actually exist?

Yes, they do exist. There are quite a few techno releases which have been pressed that way. Have had some of them in my hands in the recordstore, never bought any though (just because I didn't like the music, not because of the way it had been pressed).

Technically speaking the process would be no different then regular pressing ? ( the sounds would be pressed in reverse )

That would involve playing the record backwards.

Now something silly would be burning so you play it forward from the center and it goes outwards. It would be quite confusing. Wait is that possible?

I have a record by Miro that one side plays from the outside inwards (as normal vinyl does) and when I flip it over it plays from the inside outwards! crazy

That's what I meant. The TT spins in the same direction, but the needle goes outward from the center. It's just a matter of the groove on the record being applied in the exact opposite direction.

So, to answer your question, yes, it is possible.

I had the exact same. Think I've stated it correctly now though

Some Vestax turntables have a backwards spinning function so you can play any record in reverse.

If the groove spiral is flipped then yes, it would play outward with no difference in sound. It is not very practical, since when the record finishes playing, the cart may fall onto dots and possibly get damaged.

The thread creator meant the records that would play outward during regular forward play on TT.

No, you should be able to have a runout groove on the outside of the record just like normal vinyl has one around the center.

The only issue with this type of vinyl I can imagine is that on automatic record players (not manual decks like 1200s), they would not work correctly because they assume the record is over at the center and not the edge.
