Triggering Kicks and Percussion using MIDI notes

I'm unsure about which length of notes I should be using to trigger my percussion. Kicks, Hi Hats, Snares etc. Mostly the active percussion. I use the EXS24MKII sampler in Logic.

I'm also unsure about the envelope settings I should choose. There is an Amp envelope and a Filter envelope on the MKII sampler.

What envelope settings should I use for Kicks? which for Hi Hats? And Snares?

thank you for any help. =)

First of all... I would make the notes as long as they need to be to play the whole sample (in most samplers though, the whole sample will be played regardless of the note lenght). As for amp and filter settings, it's up to you how you like your samples to sound.

yeah but that doesn't make sense because say i open up 4 quarter notes for my hi hats or snares...that means i can only have 4 of them in a measure.

i want to know the proper note lengths and envelope settings so i can get the midi notes as close together as possible. so i can put as many midi notes in a measure as i'll need.

if you make them into 8th notes does it still play the entire sample?

thats what Chronosis is alluding to. you will have to chop up the samples if you want more in a measure but they are overlapping each other

make sure the amp envelope settings are not cutting off the end of the sound. Decay, Sustain and release should all be at maximum to ensure that the entire sample is played. Then you should be able to have as many notes in a bar as you want (well up to 64 or so).
