high def tv problem

(yes i've checked highdefforum.com)

ok so i get my hdtv and i'm super pumped to watch some high quality shit but much to my dismay when i turn on hd channels only like 2/3 of my screen is viewable... it seriously cuts off 2 inches from the top, bottom, and both sides... crazy, and my tv has no zoom feature! all it can do is go to 4:3 and vertically stretch the picture while keeping the side bars.

you have to be using component cables that are Red Green Blue. If you arent your TV wont even attempt to switch to 16:9 HD mode.

no no, i can put it in 16:9...

in 4:3 it gets stretched vertically with side bars

in 16:9 it isn't stretched but there are HUGE bars on the top, bottom, and sides

the only channel that looks normal is discovery HD.

well the HD channels are 16:9 broadcast. Some TVs dont go full screen as it distorts the image. A lot of them still have letterboxing but you just have to zoom to get past that. Its mainly the broadcast. Its like when you watch a DVD the black lines will still appear on some DVDs its because they encoded the black bars too big, not anything to do with TV.

Im surprised there is ZERO zoom function though. What TV is it?

edit: and TV will naturally go to 4:3 in any other broadcast cuz it looks like shit wide screen.

I always tell people.,..if you are buying it for movies go wide screen, for TV ...square if you can swing it. HD wont matter a whole lot. But, yeah...youll be living with square TV for most of it :\
