Mastering/EQing Demo for a Punk/Metal band

I have a friend who is in a punk/metal band who recently recorded their second demo and i asked if he could get the instruments recording in seperate sound files so i could mess with it. He said he could and i said i'll have a go at mastering and mixing etc. This is the first time i've done it for an actual band and i'll probly just be compressing, EQing and setting sound levels for each instrument on the track, (1 guitar (backing vocals), drummer, bassist (+vocalist) and probably chopping and trimming aswell to make it sound tighter.

I'll be using FL Studio 5 and Sony Sound Forge. I know FL is not the best tool for the job but it's the one i'm most comfortable with.

Does anyone have any experience in mastering this type of music? As a first timer, does anyone have any advice or tips? Sorry i'm not being specific about what i want advice on, just anything that comes to mind regarding any of the stuff mentioned above

Thanks!

The difference between EDM and rock music is that the kick isnt essential. So boost the lo mids to get a click instead of a thump. make the snares full by boosting the the hi and lo mids. put mosst the bass in the toms. keep most of the his for the hats/rides/ cymbals. pan the toms and any rides/extra crashes.

In other words put the kick, snare and hats central. then from left to right pan the toms and cymbals in order. it should go crash, tom 1, tom 2, floor tom.

With the bass guitar do as you would in dance music. except if you want to put more emphasis on the bass being plucked boost the mids.

if there is an electric guitar treat it like a saw wave, keep it whiny and virtually bassless.

and treat the vocals like vocals

then compress the shit out of each tracck.

export normalize etc. etc. etc.

one thing you should have in mind, punk bands usually aim more for a kind of raw sound ... and the masters are usually a bit more hissy than EDM would be...

Another thing is that they don't compress as much as in EDM, EDM sounds a bit too polished and if you had used the same for punk/metal it wouldn't really work...

try to let the sound be "sort of raw" but keep it in limits...something like ... "master but don't master too much" try to have this in mind when you do it and I'm sure that it will sound good

hope this helps though I don't know how to say some of the things correctly in english

a trick that i do sometimes to get that raw sound is to record the final mix onto a old c90 tape then record it back onto the pc
