creative audigy has a card for everything. their cards are awesome for gaming and recording. and they are pretty cheap.

Any M-Audio card will do.
Go for the 24/96.

My opinion based on loads of experience with several units is this bitches: M-Audio units suck ass. Any MOTU card will suffice.

Any chance you could elaborate? I'd like to know specifics of personal experiences, since I'm looking to buy one myself...

I've been with Creative for the longest time now, and just started looking at M-Audio cards and thought the Audiophiles looked pretty good. This wouldn't be for my main DAW, it would be for another PC that I'm going to set up as a "plugin farm", so basically all I need is a decent ASIO driver, low noise and an optical (ADAT or S/PDIF are both fine) output.

MOTU looks to be a little out of my price range; have people had better experiences with the Audigy or the Audiophiles?

I was just being a dick. But seriously, two words for M-Audio boxes "Driver problems". Go for the MOTU traveler its a more budgetted unit with all of the core elements that make MOTU SCs superior.

I've also been using an Echo Mia for quite a while with some success. The card is pretty solid if you can live with 4 channel + 1 spdif (2 1/4" in left-right and 2 1/4" out)

For audio recording etc..the 24/96 is a much better card than the Audigy, which is focused on gaming.

You also need to bear in mind that the Audigy 1 is locked in at 48kHz, that's a real problem when it comes to handling audio or burning cds etc..

I'd agree with this. I'm very happy with my Audigy as it is

Using echo mia midi here with nps .. mia is comparible to audiophile ... payed 170 for it and you can now get it for 70 .. drivers are excellent (aka sturdy) as is this sound quality ... works no problems with games either .... only problems are it has no mike amplifier so if you want to record you will need a desk to boost the signal and i may need more than two sets of inputs some days.
