The US has cleared sale of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) anti-missile system to India on the eve of the Indian Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee's visit to the US later this month, reports 'The Indian Express'.

Seems a bit odd that India would want these missiles? I assume they are to defend against the Pakistani (and Chinese) nuclear ballistic missile threat, but the American system (which is costing billions and billions) hasn't even been proven work yet. The system they have in America (which obviously is gonna be the most advanced) will not even have the full range of components it needs to operate at a basic level until 2007, so what the Indians think they're gonna do with the PAC-3s is anyone's guess! Suppose they worked ok against Saddam's scuds (however, the advert says they can defend against cruise missiles or unmanned ariel vehicles, but they cant) but against Pakistani or Chinese missiles?

pakistani and chinese missles cant be that advanced so i wouldnt see why it wouldn't work. Besides nothing militarily will happen with china v.s india its gonna be more like india vs pakistan with pakistan losing

No idea about the Pakistani missiles but Chinese missles are quite capable of reaching all of the US (so would easily fit into the advanced 9,500km+ category). Plus Pakistan is China's ally (who they got their nuclear reactor off so maybe they got missiles off em too?)

I agree its unlikely to be a war between China and India (altho most of China's nukes are aimed at India (and probably Russia)) But if India and Pakistan have a nuclear war they would both lose. But thats providing they have advanced early warning systems. It was different with Russia and America as the missiles had a long way to go, so you had time to detect and launch your deterent. But that time was only summat like 20 mins. It is almost impossible to defend against a missile in terminal phase so if you think that India and Pakistan share a border the missiles will be in terminal phase almost straight away. I doubt very much either of them even have advanced early warning systems so one could wipe they other out by a successful first strike. Altho I dont think either has many nukes so if they did want a successful first strike capability they would need enough nukes to destroy the other sides nuke silos (you need about three nukes to destroy a concrete nuclear missile silo) If they had enough nukes then it would not be possible to say who would win or lose!
