What does it take to dj in a club? How do you get started? Do you just buy your own equipment and start practicing? do you buy your own vinyl? How do you approach clubs about being a dj there? Any help you could give me would be great! Thanks so much guys! |
Well, your gonna need your own vinyl to practice with. Also, word of mouth is the best way out there, and dj competitions. Just mix how you want and dont worry about getting a record deal, dont sell out like a tool.

immerse yourself in dance music. download sets, listen to cds, whatever. get to understand rhythm, the 4/4 time signature, breakdowns and build ups on the tracks. need this knowledge and more for dj-ing.
next, buy a lot of vinyl, if that's your chosen medium. a good dj knows his records inside out and back to front so really listen to your tracks.
get equip. pair of decks, mixer, headphones. start listening to dj sets, take note of techniques they use (blending tracks, how they beatmix). practice lining up tracks, usually takes a few months to really get ahold of how to match beats.
then practise practise practise practise. advertise yourself and hand out mixes. the worlds biggest dj at the moment began in local clubs at age 13.
edit: hanging out with established dj's is good as well, and watching and listening to them while theyre at it.

I'm particularly interrested about this bit. Everyone says "hand out demos", but that's pretty vague. How do you present yourself? Do you go there in person and ask to meet the manager? Do you send them by mail? Do you include your CV in there?
