Arrow Bush: "Because We Were Attacked"

So, I hear that Bush's approval ratings have dropped lately and support for his war in Iraq is dropping off... How does the Whitehouse react?? With some ol' fashion propaganda. Lets constitute involvment in Iraq with the events of 9/11..

But i thought that it was proven and admitted that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11....??

Bush says US is in Iraq because of attacks on US

Sat Jun 18, 1:15 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) -
President George W. Bush defended the war in
Iraq, telling Americans the United States was forced into war because of the September 11 terror strikes.

Bush also resisted calls for him to set a timetable for the return of thousands of US troops deployed in Iraq, saying Iraqis must be able to defend their own country before US soldiers can be pulled out.

"We went to war because we were attacked, and we are at war today because there are still people out there who want to harm our country and hurt our citizens," Bush said Saturday in his weekly radio address.

Bush began a public relations offensive to defend the war as his approval rating has dropped well below 50 percent with Americans expressing skepticism about the invasion.

The centerpiece of the campaign will be a speech on June 28, exactly one year after the US-led coalition officially handed over sovereignty to a hand-picked Iraqi provisional government.

"Some may disagree with my decision to remove
Saddam Hussein from power, but all of us can agree that the world's terrorists have now made Iraq a central front in the war on terror," said the president.

"These foreign terrorists violently oppose the rise of a free and democratic Iraq, because they know that when we replace despair and hatred with liberty and hope, they lose their recruiting grounds for terror," he argued.

"Our troops are fighting these terrorists in Iraq so you will not have to face them here at home."

Bush, who was to welcome Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari for his first visit to the White House on Friday, ruled out any hard and fast timetable for withdrawing the 130,000 US soldiers currently deployed in Iraq and made it clear that it will not be anytime soon.

Terrorists "know there is no room for them in a free and democratic Middle East, so the terrorists and insurgents are trying to get us to retreat," he said.

"Their goal is to get us to leave before Iraqis have had a chance to show the region what a government that is elected and truly accountable to its citizens can do for its people."

A June 13 USA Today poll showed that almost six of 10 Americans, 59 percent, want a full or partial pullout of US troops from Iraq.

In a New York Times/CBS News poll among 1,111 adults, Bush's approval rating dropped to 42 percent while 59 percent disapproved of his handling of Iraq.

Lawmakers from both parties, opposition Democrats and Bush's own Republicans, have called for a time frame for withdrawing from Iraq. More than 1,700 US soldiers have been killed there since US and British troops invaded in March 2003.

But the Bush administration has insisted that Iraqi troops must be ready to defend their own country before US troops can return to the United States.

"I am confident that Iraqis will continue to defy the skeptics as they build a new Iraq that represents the diversity of their nation and assumes greater responsibility for their own security," Bush said. "And when they do, our troops can come home with the honor they have earned."

"This mission isn't easy, and it will not be accomplished overnight. We're fighting a ruthless enemy that relishes the killing of innocent men, women, and children," he said.

"By making their stand in Iraq, the terrorists have made Iraq a vital test for the future security of our country and the free world. We will settle for nothing less than victory."

you idiot, Bush..

Besides, didn't you hear? It's the easy thing on the web to do these days...

ok time for me to write a report supporting me where i stand on this.

Bush is not the first to use propaganda, and at the moment we are living in a state of fear in the US. Not by me I really don't care if terrorist killed me because I know nothing..blah blah blah. Now the world wouldn't be safer if Bush was not around because if we had lets say Kerry he would've invaded the stronger country North Korea instead of a weaker one like Iraq.

For as long as I can remember the US has been involved in a lot of conflicts and the presidents always tried to justify them by using propaganda. Theysay we must be involved because we r the worlds strongest country. Wars are never good because there should be another means of finding resolutions without war. But i am a bit paranoid but the reason as to why we have been involved in so many conflicts has prolly been because our national debt is really bad and the presidents and congress don't want ppl to know how bad it is. That's one of the reason as to why are in a war. To help local economy and to give ppl to talk about someting else while the governemnt goes and do some more shady shit and gets us into bigger debt.

and i will get to more but later on.

Unlike the propaganda that Saddam pulled on his own people while killing hundreds of thousands for what? Because he didn't like them?

This Iraqi seems to think it was all worth it:

quote:

Sunday, March 20, 2005
2 Years
It has been now two years since the United States, UK and other countries invaded our nation. It has been two years since Iraqis have had to live with daily violent attacks and rampant terrorism. It has been two years since our nation began being turned upside down. It has been two years since the road to democracy began.

It has been a very hard two years. So many people have died, so much has been destroyed, so many drops of tears and blood have been shed, so many have been robbed of loved ones, and so many words have been spoken about Iraq, it's future, and this war.

Two years...seems like yesterday that I was awoken by bombs going off in Baghdad, and the realisation that my life and that of my country was going to change. That very day I remember being scared that my house might be destroyed by a bomb, or that my relatives who were forcibly put into the Iraqi army might be killed.

Two years since Saddam came on TV, and pledged that Iraq would never fall. Little did he know, he surrendered like a rat in a whole only months later. Two years since my father had a heart.

Two years is about 730 days. In those days what have I seen. My eyes have seen more than I had ever hoped, more blood, more death and more pain, then I ever imagined or hoped I would have seen.

In those days I have seen the worst of humanity, the animal that lives in all humanity, the ability of humanity to destroy at will others, and rob the life given to others by God almight himself.

So you ask me, Husayn, was it worth it. What have you gotten? What has Iraq acheived? These are questions I get a lot.

To may outsiders, like those who protested last year, who will protest today. This was a fools errand, it brought nothing but death and destruction. I am sheltered in Iraq, but I know how the world feels, how people have come to either love or hate Bush, as though heis the emobdiement of this war. As though this war is part of Bush, they forget the over twenty million Iraqis, they forget the Middle Easterners, they forget the average person on the street, the average man with the average dream.

Ask him if it was worth it. Ask him what is different. Ask him if he would go through it again, go ahead ask him, ask me, many of you have.

Now I answer you, I answer you on behalf of myself, and my countrymen. I dont care what your news tells you, what your television and newspapers say, this is how we feel. Despite all that has happened. Despite all the hurt, the pain, blood, sweat and tears. These two years have given us hope we never had.

Before March 20, 2003, we were in a dungeon. We did not see the light. Saddam Hussain was crushing Iraq's spirit slowly, we longed for his end, but knew we could not challenge him, or his diabolical seed who would no doubt follow him and continue his generation of hell on Earth.

Since then, we now have hope. Hope is not a tangible thing, but it is something, it is more than being blinded by darkness, by being stuck in a mental pit without any future.

Hope has been the greatest product of the last two years. No doubt, many have died, many have died by accident or due to crimes. But their sacrifices are not, and will not be for nothing. I refuse to let it be, and my countrymen stand with me.

Our cities are smoking, our graveyards full, and terrorists in our midst. But we are not defeated. We are not down, we are not regretful. We are not going to surrender. For all that the two years have brought, the greatest thign they have given us is a future, and a view of the finish line.

Iraqis see the finish line, the finish line of freedom and democracy and a functioning nation. We can smell it, taste it, and like a sprinter, one who has broken his legs, but who has a heart full of passion, we will crawl there no matter what the cost. No matter what we must endure, we have realized what we can become, and that is the biggest result of the last two years.

Noone can take that from us. Not the terrorists, not those who want to question the good of the removal of Saddam, not those who want to reduce our glory for politics, none.

We have been brought from darkness to light. And not only has the future been made better for Iraq, but the martyrs of our nation, their blood is watering the roots of democracy across the world. We are watching our neighbors come closer to the light, and this only pushes us more, and makes us stronger in our burning desire to reach the finish line, to realize the dream that our people have had for so long.

No, we will not give up, and we will not say that the last two years were a waste. They for all their trouble have been momentus. They for us, have been a turning point in history. Whether or not you agree, this is how it looks from Iraq.

>>Source<<

It's easy for us to hypothesize, sitting at our compfy desks without the kind of worries these people have had to go through daily under Saddam.
I'd rather read from the people involved; the Iraqis themselves than see venom from some Westerns who don't have a clue but what they can cut and paste.

Until then...

Unfortunately that Iraqi who wrote that article just got killed in a suicide bomb...

Ok maybe

I think Bush is wrong to keep using 9/11 as a reason they invaded Iraq. Its as if 9/11 is the only thing he knows to justify things and it is beggining to wear thin as the polls show. I notice he was careful not to mention al-Qaida tho so I assume when he says as his excuse "cos we were attacked" he means Saddam could have sold WMDs to willing terrorists. This however, is still complete nonsense as Saddam would be as much, if not far greater target of al-Qaida than America ever wil be. The war was about WMDs and Middle East stability its just that Saddam hadn't got to the stage where he had began to construct them (if he ever was going to) but the neocons did not want to take that risk so to them it is irrelevant whether he had WMDs or not as they had convinced themselves he would do at some point. This explains why they have been lobbying government for 15 years to remove him and only got their chance on the back of 9/11...

Don't forget Poppy was DCI.

People will look for anything to get this country to start or continue in war without looking at the cost of war. War is not free it comes at a price either through lives exhausted or resources and money.

Only people engaged in the war machine stand to gain from it.

For metalgearsolid:

quote:
In the Pavlovian strategy, terrorizing force can finally be replaced by a new organization of the means of communication. Ready made opinions can be distributed day by day through press, radio, and so on, again and again, till they reach the nerve cell and implant a fixed pattern of thought in the brain. Consequently, guided public opinion is the result, according to Pavlovian theoreticians, of good propaganda technique, and the polls a verification of the temporary successful action of the Pavlovian machinations on the mind. Yet, the polls may only count what people pretend to think and believe, because it is dangerous for them to do otherwise.

Such is the Pavlovian device: repeat mechanically your assumptions and suggestions, diminish the opportunity of communicating dissent and opposition. This is the simple formula for political conditioning of the masses. This is also the actual ideal of some of our public relation machines, who thus hope to manipulate the public into buying a special soap or voting for a special party.

If it wasn't Bush it would be someone else. Don't give credit to just him. It would be silly to think he's in it for himself or acting alone. Far from it.

Actually international law in this field is so vague the legal argument for war is much stronger then the one against it.
