Assigning a Hardware Synth to control a VST?

How do you map an external controller to a vst? lets say I wanna control Audiorealism's Bassline with a Virus-C. How do you assign which knobs control which sections on the ABL?

thanks.

Use the MIDI learn function.

ABL has a .ini file or something like that where all the midi cc numbers are allocated to the program. You need to then determine which cc numbers the nobs on the virus transmit, and then alter the ABL file so that each parameter is controlled from the dials on the virus.

thx

It's a 3 step process in ABL:
1. Activate the MIDI learn
2. Turn the knob on your keyboard
3. Use the mouse to move the knob/fader in ABL

Try to do 2 and 3 at the same time, or as close as possible together. Also make sure you deactivate the MIDI learn after it picks up your control, otherwise it might mess up other controls.

In some VSTs steps 2 and 3 are reversed, in others (like z3ta+) the MIDI learn is associated with the knob itself. But I know that process works for ABL because I do it all the time. If it doesn't work, it means your MIDI isn't being routed to the plugin (check if you can play notes on the keyboard).

Thanks...I was able to get it to work using my keyboard for the 1st knob in ABL that I wanted to control..But I couldnt figure out how to do this same process again to control more knobs in ABL. Also I wanted to do this using my Virus-c..But it wouldnt control any knobs..Do you know why the midi isnt going in? But more importantly..How do I repeat this process of midi learn to control more ABL knobs?

thankks appreciate the help =]

Well I don't have a Virus, but I would imagine that if your keyboard works and the Virus doesn't then you probably need to program the Virus to send out the CC's on those knobs. Someone more familiar with that hardware might be able to tell you, otherwise you'll have to RTM.
