Lately my laptop starts up REALLY slow, but once i'm in, everything works at normal speed. Very weird. I already ran MSCONFIG and unchecked all kinds of programs, but my computer seems to keep booting real slow. Is there a way I can re-install WinME and preserve all the stuff on my computer like music, reason stuff etc. etc.? Because this laptop is from 2001 or so it only has one hard drive and I don't have anything partitioned (mainly because I don't know how to do that).

I'm not totally sure, I believe you can do a clean install over the current one, but that may not be a solution to the problem. Have you tried doing a test at www.antivirus.com for security & virus problems. If not then maybe you have too much stuff on your hdd or something, tho i'd get an opinion from someone who's a bit more sure

Partition...ME takes up like 400mb...so make a 500mb partition. Put all your music on a music partition, and all your files on another.

i ran ME on my laptop for awhile, only cuz thats what it came with. ME is by far the worst OS i've ever used. i recommend you back everything up and install XP.

I'd go 2000 Pro. It's not as much as a resource whore like XP

Yeah I pondered that for a while too, but this machine is too old to smoothly run XP on it I think. XP will be indeed a great memory whore then.

my laptop is a shitty compaq 800mhz and i dont even know how much ram. only a 10gb hard drive. its an old crapper but it still runs better on xp than me. *shrug*

and yeah i like 2000 pro better than xp as well, but i looooooove xp for the plug and play. its toooooo easy. and i'm a sucker cuz i'm a lazy.

If you have the program Partition Magic you can redefine you current partition to make two. Get the size that youll need to backup your files, then make a partition of that size + 20% (if possible).

Make the new partition with the program and copy all of your files over. Then, format your ME partition, for a clean install. Then, buy a copy of Windows 2000 Pro which can be had these days for under seventy-five dollars (US). Install that instead of ME which, as many have pointed out, is a weak OS.

you probably dont need to re-install the OS .. your problem could possibly be that you have too many programs loaded inside the windows registry .. have you installed any software, and deleted it using the 'delete' function, instead of the 'add/remove programs' function ?? you probably have too many loose programs floating around the registry that you don't use anymore ..

or maybe your hard drive is spazing out on you .. then again, you said your computer works fine after the OS loads, so your HDD should be fine .. i say check your registry contents, and look at Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs section to see if there are programs listed that you dont have on your computer.

does anyone here have problems with ME managing multiple partitions and spazing out when performing hardcore stuff from VM and back ?? just wondering ..

i fooled around with the VM, and pointed it to another partition away from the main running one, but it was slow, so i brought it back to the main running one, and it spazzed out .. now i have windows automatically doing the VM, but it still spazzes out now and then .. .. i never have memory problems on my 2000 box .
