What do you do when you’re a good-looking young woman with a sultry voice, superstar producers… and the name of one of the world’s most despised individuals?
Well, if you’re Waffa bin Laden, the 26-year-old niece of Osama, you’ll attempt to distance yourself from your notorious family member — whom she has only met once — while trying to launch a career as a pop star.
Waffa, who drinks, smokes and ignores Muslim dress codes, has reportedly set to work with producer Nellee Hooper, who previously recorded Madonna, Sade and Bjork, among others. She’s also rumoured to be working with Wyclef Jean and All Saints’ svengali John Benson. While these high-profile names are backing Waffa, snarky American Idol guy Simon Cowell has said that her name will be her downfall and that only a last name of "Hitler" could be worse. He might have a point.
While Waffa’s mother is outspoken and supportive of her headstrong daughter’s ways, it’s probably not a surprise that the majority of her family isn’t exactly enthralled by her independence. In spite of their lack of encouragement, Waffa didn’t back away from using the family name.
Disliked by her family, mistrusted by the rest of the world: not exactly the easiest beginning for an up-and-coming chanteuse. Then again, maybe having the odds stacked against her will strengthen Waffa’s will. Right now, she’s a lawyer who, until recently, lived in New York. Actually, she was living within spitting distance to the World Trade Centre at the time of the attacks. She now resides in London, England.
Whether or not Waffa, who has been likened to Australia’s Natalie Imbruglia in the looks department, becomes the next hot pop star remains to be seen. Either way, she plans to have her first single out by year’s end.
