A school isn't such a bad idea. I wouldn't mind going to DJing school if my teachers were Zabiela, Paul Van Dyk and Armin van Buuren.

Of course nobody has to go to school to become a great DJ but it never hurts I went to a DJing course and production course over about 16 weeks and it was great fun and learnt some new things a long the way plus you meet some great and interesting people that love the same thing as you and always good contacts to keep at hand.
the one i went to hear in melbourne was @ http://www.djmsm.com.au

I read through the courses which pretty much first teach you how to "perfectly" mix between 3 turntables. Then learn how to mix with out using the headphones. Next learn basic scrathces and analyze all the DMC videos. Perfect all the scratches. Then mix all the music from the 60s 70s 80s 90s today. Then memorize all the music from said years including the titles the artist and genre. Finally learn how to produce your own music with programs like fruity loops. Make a mix CD to turn in.

Sounds like a pretty gay school to me.

No, you don't have to go to a DJ school or on a course but it's not a bad idea. I learnt a lot at Warwick Uni's DJ society (http://www.livethemix.com/getdecked), where I was taught all the basics. Then I went on to read tutorials online and also taught myself to mix in key. There's always new tips, tricks and techniques to be learnt so going on a course can always be useful.
