Put more into RAM then the CPU, you won't need that beefy of a CPU, just alot of ram since that is what will be tagged the most. 1.8Ghz+ is plenty IMHO. Maxtor / Western Digital all make solid harddrives (I have two of each from both companies) and they both work flawlessly, but since you'll be storing alot of meaty files, try to get a really big harddrive (100+ maybe?).

Software you should check out:
- DSS DJ / Traktor DJ Studio
- Soundforge
- Abelton

do you really need a laptop? they are annoying, expensive, non-upgradable, break alot, and generally limit you in a lot of ways. especially when dealing with sound, because your only option for a decent soundboard will be a IEEE1394 or USB2 offering..

As far as processor goes.. go with whatever is a good value at the time. Presently, the defaco notebook processor seems to be the Pentium M 730. This is a 1.6ghz chip with a large cache (2MB) and would be plenty for your needs. I wouldn't be at all supprised if one of the current celeron chips (no, not the old uber-slow ones!) did just fine for you.

what you need is lots of hard drive and lots of memory. both will help more than an expensive CPU.

as far as software...here's my preferences at the moment:
for mixing: Native Instruments Traktor DJ Studio 2.6+
for audio editing: Adobe Audition 1.5+
dealing with levels: Waves L3 Multimaximizer or C4 Compressor plugins running under Audition

have fun!

44.1k/16bit... thats what CDs use.

volume? gain? your goal is to have the peak level be just below the zero db point (maximum) and have your average level as high as possible.
