Crackling while recording in Sound Forge...

i just got a new computer, bout a week or two ago and whenever i record a new mix i get all these crackling noises like it sounds like im playing a dirty vinyl record throughout the whole mix. At first i thought it was the RCA cables, so i went out and bought new ones that didnt help. I went to m-audio website to troubleshoot all things it says to do when your recordings crackle, none of those worked. I'm getting really frustrated about this because on my old computer, it was crackle free now on this brand new amd athlon xp 3500 comp, im getting this crackling annoyance. any one 1 know what to do. here's an example of the crackling: http://www.chrisluzz.com/audio/Sound 2.mp3

specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3500, 1024 mb ram, Geforce FX 5500
Windows XP Pro w/ SP 2
M-Audio 2496 Audiophile soundcard

All i can think of is check and re-check your soundcard/device drivers.

I had this problem before. The answer is very simple, try Adobe Audition aka Cool Edit Pro. If you still have problems, reply this post and, I'll think of something else.

check how you have the soundcard set up in soundforge and make sure you go into the soundcard settings. I'm not at home so I can't tell you the specifics but look in the settings... If you haven't figured it out soon I'll post again when I'm at home with the proper info.

use the problem solving skills you learned in elementary school.

your first step was correct in checking your cabling. to cut the whole program settings step just try recording in a different audio program. if you get the same bad results, try putting in a different source like a portable cd player, a mic, a tv, a dvd, whatever. if the problem persists in all recording programs with all sources, then its more specificly a software driver problem OR an on-board hardware problem (though thats VERY unlikely). Should it be one of those problems, well then you need to do some googling.

if all of the above fails, check your IRQs. you wanna make sure that your audiophile card isnt sharing an IRQ with any other devices.

you can check this by following these steps:

start -> run: msinfo32

this will bring up the system information window

in the left column expand "Harware Resources" and double click IRQs.

you wanna make sure that nothing else is using the same IRQ and your m-audio card.

if there is another device conflicting with your soundcard, the first step is to disable all devices taht you dont use, com ports, lpt ports, etc. then do a full power down, and boot back up.

run msinfo32 again and recheck IRQs, you will see that some of them sould have reasigned themselves. if you stil have a conflict, disable the device that is conflicting with your audiophile card and reboot. on start up enable previous device and reboot again.

if this still doesnt work, consult your motherboard manual for info on manually configuring your IRQs. you want to have that M-audio card on an IRQ by itself. same with your video card. some Bios programs wont let you manually config your IRQs, that is an issue you will have to deal with your MB company on.

Hope this helps, Good Luck!
