Dunno Raving mad

Canadians strike again......

Raving mad about dance fest
Noise, garbage, drug charges result from weekend event

PETER CRISCIONE, Banner Staff Writer

Neighbours of the Orangeville Agricultural Centre "are raving mad," say property owners, who are still feeling the aftermath of an electronic dance festival held at the Mono facility last weekend.

"We're all raving mad out here," says Brenda Teeter, who lives next to the fairgrounds on Fifth Sideroad in Mono. "The music started at around noon on Thursday when they first showed up with their boom boxes. It didn't end until (7 p.m.) Sunday night. Boom, boom, boom -- that's all we heard all night, every night."

Teeter explains that residents were practically held hostage July 8 to 10, having to contend with constant loud music and a roving band of revellers who littered, stole and turned a quiet neighbourhood into one big free-for-all. Someone made off with Teeter's car and later crashed it along the Fourth Line.

"They stole my car right out of the garage while we were sitting in the backyard," she said.

"It was absolutely terrible," Teeter's husband Lynn added. "I'm so upset I can hardly talk about it."

The three-day event, or rave, featured electronic music and had been held in Collingwood and Clearview in previous years.

Organizers of the festival approached the agricultural society in recent months about relocating the event to Mono.

About 5,000 people were expected to attend the festival last weekend.

"These people don't care; they urinate where they want, vomit where they want, fornicate where they want," Teeter told The Banner. "This should never be allowed to happen again."

Eileen Thompson, who also lives next to the fairgrounds, said one person stormed straight into her house after she refused to allow them to use the telephone.

"I had a young girl come in here ... she completely bypassed me and grabbed my phone," Thompson said. "She knocked on my door and asked if she could use the phone. She had 25 cents in her hand and said 'Here.' I asked where she was phoning and she said Toronto. I told her that 25 cents wasn't going to cover it ... she just came right in."

Thompson said the music festival didn't leave a good first impression.

"The music went all night ... I'm not impressed at all," she said. "I don't want to see it back here (in Mono) again. They more or less took over."

Dufferin OPP Staff Sgt. Walter Kolodziechuck said in addition to a car theft charge, police issued three drug charges, one domestic-related charge and received a number of complaints regarding trespassing and noise.

Some residents say music could be heard as far away as the new Island Lake Estates housing development, located near First Line in Mono.

The town enforces a noise bylaw and a bylaw official was on site to take decibel readings every so often, noted Mono mayor Keith Thompson.

Thompson said he has yet to see the records of the noise levels but adds that event organizers could face fines if the bylaw was violated.

Months prior to the event, the mayor said he met with organizers and agricultural board officials to discuss how the festival was to going to be run.

Thompson noted that at the time, he was under the impression that ample security would be provided and that the music would stop at around midnight.

"That is certainly the impression that I got," Thompson said.

He also noted that municipal officials will be meeting with members of the agricultural society to discuss the future of the festival in Mono.

Rave organizers and agricultural board members could not be reached for comment.

So one night of boom boom boxes in your drab lives wont hurt anyone.... fuck this country

i'm sure we'll see this become more of a problem as the baby-boomers get older. Mind you weren't our baby-boomers woodstock going hippies?? You'd think they would understand.

i think that the stories from the residents sound very very much embellished.. especially the one where the girl knocked on the door to use the phone, that sounds completely made up. I think they wanted something other than noise to complain about

Apparently a car did get stolen but the rest of it is probably BS. Like the girl walking in to use the phone. If that had really happened the cops were literally 30 steps away so why didnt they call them?

I think people are just upset that a bunch of young people had a good time and that they had to close their windows for once during the summer.

People in Canada have absolutely no tolerence for each other. Its really really sad. And most people even on this board are guilty of the exact same way of thinking except in the Orangeville case it's that same mentality being used against something that TAs enjoy.

pffft. sounds like my parents, as soon as a kick drum sounds its "TURN DOWN THAT AWFUL MUSIC!"

not very convieniant since i'm a musician and try to write music at home.

but seriously, thats how it is, when anything out of the ordinary happens, ppl complain, complain, complain. thats how life will always be, so don't be surprised. think of it this way. most of the time when you're having fun, someone else isn't. (ie. the bus boys at guvernment...ouch, that jobs gotta suck lol)
