canadians are cool! they're so friendly!!! Well, that's a generalization on my part. I only went once... to toronto, but i was perplexed how friendly those canadians are!

little advice on the city of montreal because your proximity to that city will be your downfall, and failure out of school for sure:

Clubs
Aria : Like space, maybe a little grungier, not as cool lighting, but the atmosphere and crowd is far better. Can get packed, but probably not as badly packed, and well the acts there are phenominal. I have yet to be in there on any night [resident's night or a big-name headliner] and not be impressed. These guys at this club bring in loads of different kinds of talent, if you're looking for breaks, techno, or trance, this is the spot.

Stereo : One of the top 5 sound systems in the world. Custom built for the old theatre room the space is located in by Angel Moraes, it's a purely analog system with the best, warmest bass I have ever heard. You get a good house DJ in that club who knows how to work the system and the experience is out of this world. One of my fondest clubbing memories came when sander kleinenberg was a resident back in 2003, played a track called 'trauma' [inkfish remix], and when the bass kicked in on that track I almost hit the ground. Another couple of cool features about this club is the fact the floor and pretty much anything in it is plywood, to absorb the rediculous amount of sweat from the really long nights. The floor is also on it's own suspension system to be easier on the speed freaks joints for their marathon dancing sessions. Because of the location of this club, and the general attitude of montreal as a city, this club attracts a strong gay contingent, in fact, if you have any problem with gays at all, avoid saturday night completely. If not, then you'll have an amazing time any night. Stereo plays house music, usually until mid-afternoon, when the afterhours club itself opens at 3-4am. Oh, and apparently there's a deal going on currently at the club for the stereobar which is open before the afterhours spot goes on. Something like $20 CDN for 10 drinks.

Another couple words on montreal clubbing:
#1 The women are fantastic.
#2 No one goes out before midnight
#3 Last call is at 3am
#4 When you go out to party, expect to be out all night. Montrealers don't pussy-foot around and go home when the headliners leave, and as a result, their locals kick some serious ass [see DJ Preach, Misstress Barbara for reference]

Good Eats
Obviously, you're gonna get hungry partying till well into the next day.

Amirs - On Ste Catherine's St, inbetween Aria and Stereo. Makes the best damn falaffels I've ever had. Orgasmic food.

Schwartz's Smoked Meat - if you haven't heard of montreal smoked meat, shame on you, it is also orgasmic. And this place is the best. Don't let the shitty looking space fool you, anyone who knows anything about montreal should be going to this place when they're in town. 3895 St. Laurent Blvd., Plateau Mont-Royal

Other parties
Summertime in montreal is great as well, because every sunday, there's a party on ile de ste helene called piknik electronique, where locals will play starting at 1pm in one of the major parks in the city, with a spectacular view overlooking the skyline of the city. Last time I was at one of them was during the labour day weekend, when misstress barbara rocked out to 2000 people for a spectacular sundown set, right before I went out to one of their massives.

Montreal Massives : parties like bal en blanc, black and blue [where I believe a huge contingent of TOTAs are going to mission up for on Thanksgiving weekend in october, with danny tenaglia, chus and ceballos, and rumour has it paul van dyk], are all really good. They may not be as big as the ones in europe, but the quality can't be doubted. Whether they're partying in the bell center [hockey arena where the Montreal Canadiens play], or elsewhere, the lineups are always quality, and the crowds are, well, montreal crowds. Long lasting, friendly, and good looking. Most of all tho, trance isn't the biggest thing in montreal. It's all about techno and good new yourk/toronto/montreal style dirty house beats. So if you can live with a little less trance and keep an open mind, it's a great music scene.

Anyway, I know you're going to ottawa, but I am unfamiliar with their scene, although I hear it's getting better in light of toronto's resurgence and montreal's flourishing scene. But you will go to montreal, and you will have a good time. There is no way you can't.
