REVIEW: Dr. Trance retirement cruise w/St. Pete, DJ Iain, Deko-ze and Jelo

hmmm...no review thread or did I miss it? I noticed a distinct lack of TAs on this one...for shame! This cruise was easily as good as the Canada Day 2004 cruise with Armin. More Cruises!!!!!

after shutting down Guv sometime before 8am, went home to shower and catch an hour's sleep, then off to the dock with a few TAs (musicsnob_not, chrismack, beanieboy). Nice to run into RobbyG as we boarded too...good partying with ya again! Labour of Love, KH...looking forward to it!

Old schoolers all over the place...along with people who were probably in diapers when Don and Iain first became involved with EDM, lol. Very cool vibe from the start as the captain jokingly announced "I don't care what you guys smoke, even though *I* searched you, just make sure you smoke it outside". LOL.

St. Pete dropped some classics, warmed up the crowd well...most people were chillin', having some drinks, etc., with a small # on the dancefloor. Dr. Trance took to the decks and began what would prove to be the sickest set of old school epic trance I've heard in a LOOOOOONG time! Few people were still sitting down by mid-set. No prog, no tech...nothing but *pure trance* and it was soooooo good! The Dr. seemed to be enjoying every minute of it too...with near flawless mixing, I might add.

Fun moment...RobbyG wondering if Don would take a request and runs up with our mutual suggestion...about a half hour later, he drops it...beautiful sunny day, Toronto skyline in the background, and a DJ legend drops 'Art of Trance - Madagascar' for us...it just doesn't get any better than that!!! Also played at some point, can't remember by who though, was Activate's request in the roll call thread of Brainbug - Nightmare...Braveheart theme was another...and tons of stuff I have at home but can't ID off the top of my head.

Thanks again to Rob for also introducing me to Iain (and for snapping pics with he and Deko-ze)...Limelight Sundays were a huge part of my early clubbing days and among my first experiences with EDM. We asked Iain when he was going on, "whenever Don decides to let me...", lol. The way he was enjoying being behind the decks, it seemed like the answer would be never Also had the chance to finally meet Deko-ze and chat for a bit...is there a nicer guy in the biz? I don't think so. Class act. Met Dave Marsden and St. Pete...very cool!

Finished the cruise by wandering back and forth between Iain's set of electronica and Deko-ze downstairs...met a couple of other TAs...Mobius...a girl who's name I now forget, sorry!

Great event...this was easily on par with the Canada Day '04 cruise with Armin...and I'll say the same thing I said after that one...those of you who chose to skip this event missed a good one!!! Great vibe, beautiful weather and excellent music!

This was the perfect way to end what turned out to be such an amazing weekend of partying. From Systems of Fri w/Eso... aaaaaall the way up to Collingwood on Sat......and back down to the docks/pier of Toronto on Sunday. all definitely worth it. I'd do it all again... when u luv the music u'd pretty much do anything. We Mobius(Carlos), Lil_Kandi_Angel(Corinne), Kevin & Myself (Stilez/Sonny) got there around 12noon.. but the boat didn't launch until 1. Had an awesome GYROS (Chris..u would've been proud of this one. The best I've eaten in a long time, or maybe it's just that I was sooo hammerd & hungry from Collingwood. ) Ran into Mc Flipside while waiting to get on the boat... saw St. Pete once we got on... and Dr. Trance. St. Pete played some wicked stuff (most were all his productions btw! ) went downstairs for a bit... talked with Deko-ze for a bit..while Jelo spun (they did a b2b set ) went back upstairs and Dr. Trance came on. WOW!! the vibe on the boat was like that of an ol' school rave Nitrous/Hulla/Destiny/L.Adrenaline style!! I can't believe more of the ol' school TA's weren't there?? Met some I've seen before... face wise.. I remember.. but I'm horrible with names.. but I do remember a girl named Tara (I think) wearing a TA tank top, Mark T.. who was chillin with Robby G most of the time, and I also think beanieboy who was wearing the OLD SCHOOL style TA shirts.. with that little animal on the front.. and "addicted yet" on the back. Hard to miss that one! So many classic traxx were dropped... the few I remember were..of course Robby's request.. Art of Trance - Madagascar, Gouryella - Gouryella ('98 Mix or something like that), Greece 2000 (Vocal edit)<--- I haven't heard this version being played in like over 3yrs!! the best version IMO! , Chicane - Saltwater, Yahel - Sugar1, Pocket Damage, ....so many others I can't even remember, but u get the picture. stayed for a bit of Dj Ians beginning of his set... but went downstairs to catch Deko-ze & Jelo tear it up. Went nuts when Deko-ze dropped Mode Hookers - Breathe (Instrumental) he also played Dk8 - Murder was the bass, and a classic house track called "Big Fun" . towards the end of the cruise I returned upstairs to catch the end of Dj Ians set...and it was sooooo chill.mellowed out... it was the perfect way to end the cruise/day/weekend. He played a chillout/breaks/downtempo version of Time to say goodbye.. that I haven't heard. made me get all nostalgic.. and a bit sad to say goodbye.. not only to the legend DR. Trance who's had such a huge impact on "OUR" scene... but also sad to say goodbye to the cruise & awesome weekend.

We were so 'GONE'.. that we all forgot to bring a camera so this is the only pic I took of the day.. I took it with my cam. phone. whew! thank gawd for those things.

p.s. I didn't go home.. slept at Mobius' and went straight to the boat cruise.. that would explain why I'm wearing what I wore to the cottage.

then again how many TOTAs now have actually heard Dr. Trance spin ??

awesome DJ and figure of the TO scene , but then so much has changed since the time he was in his prime .. i think he's doing a good thing moving on and allowing others to take the reigns in this new age of dance music in Toronto ..

After Scumfrog, no sleep and this cruise I'm surprised you remember anything...

I was regretting buying tickets for this all weekend when I realized I wasn't going to be getting any sleep from Saturday am until Sunday night but I am so glad I did.

Beautiful weather, cold beer, great vibe, good friends, and classic music...perfect Sunday afternoon.

Met a couple other TA's but my memory doesn't seem to want to work.

Dekoze - what an amzingly nice guy. Start posting some of your sets like you said you should.

This was one of the best parites I've been to in years. Such a great old school vibe. It was so much fun to party with people I haven't seen in years. It was a bittersweet party, a last glimpse of what the scene was like back in 1999. It was a trip down memory lane, and I loved every minute of it, especially when Don dropped "Westbam -Wizards Of The Sonic (Matt Darey Remix)" I busted out into a full raver hop for that one, something I haven't done in years LOL.

Don thanks for the years of fun, and for everything you've done for the scene in Toronto.

RESPECTS!!!

a'ight- great pics and they brought a tear to my eye.....

Years ago...and I mean years ago- when I was a young un, I started listening to CFNY 102.1, incidentally when DON BERNS was on their morning show. His show was ballsy to say the least- its what got me into the ALternative music scene. This was back when "with an Edge" did not have to be spelled out.... We discovered the likes of Skinny Puppy, The Cure, The Cult, Kate Bush, and early early Erasure....This man was freaking hilarious bec. he simply didn't care for convention. Always,always.... he hit me right in the funny bone ...that I'd almost pee my pants on the way to work. Then he left and CFNY was never the same. With the exception of one guy after him, none grabbed me the way Don did. ahhhhh... what an era that was.
Of course I went to Limelight afterwards- lol, this is where DJ IAIN made me tapes while he was spinning there, I have spent many a times in the DJ booth feeling every bit the queen I am
hahahaha- sooooooo many memories and this thread brought it all up.

I pay tribute to these people more from the Alternative music scene bec. like EDM, that too was a genre that stood its own ground (for a while) I figured this was an excellent place to salute these pioneers who I know put their asses on the line ( I remember the morning show well) to forward the mentality that.. It was ok to march to a different drumbeat.....like I did.

Thank You, Sirs- for your contribution.

Neeta/voodoo.
p/s Mark- now that i think about it, as fun as it was to soak in the rays at CB that morning- I wish I had gone on this cruise. but I really woulda cried right through it... tears of joy to c these guys.
i wish there was another such boatcruise......

p/s p/s - listening to Catching up with Depeche Mode.
